We must have looked like absolute crazy people as we sauntered down the sidewalk. My blonde wig, the one I’d purchased with Grimmy, was itchy—disgustingly itchy—and it was hot. The flannel that was covering my tattoos was causing me to sweat heavily, but Hallie’s pink wig and Lennon’s did a fine job of covering her up. They were both decent disguises and though I had never been more uncomfortable, it was all worth it. We thrifted all day and not a single person recognized who we were. I was basking in it. Basking in us. The past week had been relaxing, more relaxing than the past few months, but I think just the assurance that I had her was helping. The fact that I knew she felt similarly made me hopeful, but at the same time, the looming return of the tour was going to suck. I’d tried to get her to agree to drive down to San Diego with me tomorrow for the first North American show, but she’d made plans to go up and visit her parents in Napa Valley and I didn’t want to push her.
“Wanna go to Paradise Cove tonight?” I loved the way she would reach for my hand—I loved holding her hand. Simple as it was, the feeling was something else.
“The restaurant in Malibu?”
“Yeah.” I nodded, figuring that it was our last night together, we might as well go all out.
“Sounds good to me.”
“So, Blondie…” She turned around and began walking backwards, facing me. “You gonna miss me or what?” I laughed just as she tripped and it may as well have been a scene in a cheesy rom-com movie. I caught her waist and pulled her into me.
“I am going to miss you so much…”
“Yeah?” I leaned down, chastely pressing my lips against hers.
“Yeah. You gonna miss me?”
“Just a little bit.”
“Oh? Only a little bit?” She giggled and stepped on my feet as I began walking the two of us.
“Just like…this much…” Her pointer finger and thumb spread only about a centimeter.
“Hm…that’s not very much.”
“Yeah, don’t worry about it.”
“Tell me you’ll miss me more than that.”
“I might.”
“Tell me—say it right now.”
“I’m going to…”
“Yeah, yeah, out with it!”
“Sort of…”
“Baby…” I pouted, causing the volume of her giggles to heighten.
“I’m going to miss you more than…every single drop of water in the whole world.”
“That’s better.” She wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed my jawline.
“This is like…the first potentially long-distance relationship I’ve ever been in.”
“M’a good lad to be in one with.”
“Oh, are you?”
“I am, yes.”
“Hmmm…and why is that?”
“Cause. I won’t ever be too far away.”
“Yeah, except when you’re on the other side of the world.”
