'So, there's three drowning victims this year,' Sam said. After you left they decided that they should focus on the case and wait for you to open up. Wait for you to come back. It was Dean's suggestion, mostly because he didn't want to think about what he would do if you didn't.
When he had called you a couple weeks back, there was a reason for it. Everything had been falling apart in his life since when John went missing, he roped Sam and you in to get everything back together. He wanted to have his family back. He even wished Namie was there with you three, but like Sam he believed Namie was gone, forever.
So, he wanted everyone he could have with himself. He wanted to keep going.
'And before that?' Dean questioned half-heartedly.
'Uh, yeah. Six more. Spread out over the past thirty-five years. Those bodies were never recovered either. If there's something out there, it's picking up its pace.'
Dean was folding his clothes, only half-listening to his brother speak, his mind wandered back to you now and again. It had been an hour since you left. When were you coming back?
'You don't care! You all are like him. No one cares! Everybody leaves! You hate me, I know that!' your words echoed in his head.
Lke who? Who were you comparing them to?
Dean hadn't known just how broken you had gotten these past few years. He hated that he wasn't there for you. A lump formed in his throat and he felt like crying out when he felt like someone was squeezing his heart.
Dean cleared his throat. 'So, we got a lake monster on a binge?' Dean wasn't even listening to what he was saying, but hunting was his second nature, it came to him as easily as breathing. So, even if he didn't listen much, he still understood everything.
'This whole lake-monster theory, it-it just bugs me,' Sam stated. Dean was thinking about what his father told him seven years ago, on the day you left. It just didn't add up that you would react this way after how you left.
Why would you act this way unless you cared about the brothers? Why would his father say what he did? What actually happened?
'Why?' Dean walked over to Sam, forcing everything "you" our of his mind and bringing all his attention to the case at hand. He couldn't help you, he may as well help a few innocents.
'Loch Ness. Lake Champlain,' Sam explained, 'There are literally hundreds of eye-witness accounts. But here, almost nothing. Whatever it is out there, no one's living to talk about it.'
Dean leaned over Sam, pointing at a name, 'Wait. Barr. Christopher Barr. Where have I heard that name before?'
Sam sighed, clicking on the link, 'Cristopher Barr, the victim in May. Oh. Christopher Barr was Andrea's husband. Lucas' father. Apparently, he took Lucas out swimming. Lucas was on a floating wooden platform when Chris drowned . . . two hours before the kid got rescued.'
Sam clicked on a photo of Lucas being rescued, 'Maybe we have an eyewitness after all.'
'No wonder that kid was so freaked out,' Dean said sadly. He could relate, he knew you would too if you were here. 'Watching one of your parents die isn't just something you get over.'
A knock on the door distracted Dean. He opened it to reveal you, your head hung down in shame. You looked composed now, but you avoided meeting the elder Winchester's eyes. Dean breathed out a sigh of relief when he saw you. He wasn't sure that you would come back, and he was glad that you did.
You sighed, your thoughts more in order after your outburst. Also, you may have taken a little help of your knife. You had your handkerchief around your new wounds and you wanted to clear them before Sam or Dean saw the blood seep through your flannel. Not only that, but you also came back because you wanted to do right by them, 'I would understand if-if you don't want me to hunt with you anymore. I was out of line and I'm sorry for-'
