I walk past Eden's room like every morning but instead of asking what the answer to her question is, I ask her something different. "How's your ankle?"
"Um... it's ok, a little sore but I can walk fine," she answers me.
"That's ok, maybe just bandage it for school today," I suggest. "Have you flipped your coin yet?" I ask.
"Umm... No," she gives me an unassured look.
"Ok, let's see what you get," I say and she gives me a nervous smile. I know very well that todays question is Should you talk to the person you like today? I watch carefully as she takes a deep breathe before finally releasing the coin into the air. I continue to watch and see her bottom lip quiver as the answer NO is revealed. "It's only for today Eden, you'll be perfectly fine." Glancing around her room I discover a new piece of art. It is positioned perfectly in the centre of her art wall. It reads Asher O'brien and Eden Withers. Underneath that it says Ashden, whatever that's supposed to mean. Wait! Asher O'brien...I wonder if she knows much about his family.
.....
Eden walks out the door with her bag on her back and a slight limp. Phew... time for me to do some investigating. I find myself flicking through my phone book and eventually find the O'brien's. I dial the number and wait for an answer. "Hi," I hear a voice on the other end.
"Hi, it's Sonya," I say.
"Oh hey Sonya, it's Heather," she tells me.
"Um... would I be able to come over and have a talk with you today?" I ask her hoping for a yes.
"I'm a bit busy, but I guess I could fit it in. Is 10 ok?" she asks me.
"Yep, see you then," I say and that ends our short phone call. Thank goodness for that, I can't wait to talk to her and tell her about my recent discovery. I've known Heather since high school and we were really great friends until she became obsessed with some guy and left me to find my own way around. I really hope my daughter hasn't been doing the same to Grace, who isn't just her best friend, but her twin sister. A small sigh escapes my mouth before I decide to get some house work done. I still have 2 hours to spare so I have plenty of time to get some little jobs done.
....
I have 10 minutes to go before I have to leave so I use it to go and see the drawing one more time. Everything is so real now. My daughter is really in her first relationship. I'm so shocked. I guess it's expected, she's 15 and it's normal. I sigh and am about to leave her room when I see her phone lying on her bed. I reach for it and see an unread message. Thanks for 'helping' with that homework you promised to help me with. Thanks for nothing, It isn't all about Asher, I exist too... :'(. It's from Grace. I see Mrs James tomorrow so I'll be talking to her about it tomorrow and Eden when she gets home. She can't just ignore her best friend because a boy came along.
I check the time, it's 9:55, I better get going...
