1940, New York, United-States of America. It's been already a year since the war started and the pace of it doesn't seem to be slowing down, slowly getting the States and already affecting it from afar. In the mean time, everybody is still trying to keep living and to keep being useful each in their own way, but not everybody is gifted the same means. Some even have boundaries.
"Mister Paulson, the last formula is ready and safe."
"Finally, put my name on it and bring it to me after for verification."
"With all due respect sir I'm pretty confident about the veracity of my wor--"
"On my desk on a minute West, or, like I keep telling you, I'm not keeping it, and you. You know how it works and we're going in a great way so don't screw everything up, would you?"
"...understood, sir."
Whooping cough vaccine trial number 3, Jamie Paulson and Janet West.
This, it's what Janet wants to write, but she can't because that's the rule. Her name is just going to be erased from that paper. It's not fair and everybody knows it, but her person is already lucky to have such a valuable position.
Maybe she's being used there, but at least she found her way to make herself useful.
Here's the everyday life of Janet West, it's not easy but at least it pays the bills. From Monday to Saturday in those pharmaceutical company labs, and on the training field on the weekend, forming tomorrow troupes for God knows what's coming. It's not an easy pace to follow, but it's a choice, the choice of a woman constantly pushing herself to this seemingly unattainable top. Unattainable top for her.
• FRIDAY, 9 AM - US Special Operation Executive base¹ •
"West, great to see you're already there."
Janet lifts her eyes from her unfinishable chemistry formulas to Peggy who just entered the room, she warmly smiles at her.
"Up and early as usual. How was the rescue mission?"
"Erskine is safe and healthy, everything worked.", she answers to Janet who lightly nods, already looking back at her notes to get back to work.
"Glad to hear--"
"But that's not why I'm here."
Janet looks back up to Peggy, a confused frown on her face.
"I'm all ears, then."
"How about a little update to your skills?"
Janet frowns even more, she lowers her eyes on the file that Peggy is sliding her: Strategic Scientific Reserve: project rebirth.
"I'm afraid I'm not following agent Carter, I'm not a member of the SSR. I... was not selected, for that."
"I'm aware, but you could
"What? Why?"
Janet finally takes the file in hand and opens it to reveal this mystery, which seems to be all about Johann Schmidt. A pretty big file to come to the conclusion that this man is the devil himself, head of HYDRA : the most impressive and advanced scientific organization at the time, if only it wasn't lead by a nazi supremacist.
"Wasn't Schmidt your target on this mission, I mean in addition to rescue Erskine? I don't understand."
"He was not, at least not exactly. Defeating him will require special needs, and that's when you come in."
