Janet and Bucky arrive at Janet's mom house after a long walk. The road between Bucky's home and Janet's mother's one is not long itself, but the further they are from this place and the safer is Janet's heart. Janet knocks at the door, her mother comes and opens it.

"James! It's good to see you, how are you son?"

She takes Bucky in her arms to hug him, Bucky politely hugs her back while Janet looks away, there's not much she can do at the moment, just wait.

"Great, how about you Ms. West ?"

Bucky gently breaks the hug, Janet's mom steps away to let them enter. Janet follows Bucky inside, just staying silent and listening to their greetings.

As always, no hugs, no "how are you?" for her, or even a "good evening", or at least a look. She's used to it now, it's been almost 10 years that it is this way, but it still leaves a bitter sensation down the heart.

Janet looks around, her mom and Bucky are still talking. Loud. Bucky is not the one at fault in that, he's not really searching to continue the conversation but he can't also just ignore her.

"Are you hungry James? I just finished cooking, I'll bring you a plate."

"Two, please Ms. West."

Janet looks up at Bucky and frowns, confused. What is he doing? It is supposed to be a quick visit, making sure she's alive then leaving. Not having diner and drinking tea.

"Oh, no problem sweetheart.", answers her mom while going to the kitchen to get the plates. Bucky turns his eyes to Janet who's still gazing at him the same way, she whispers :

"What are you doing? I'm not hungry."

"I know but how about just sharing a meal?"

"Sharing a meal?"

Oh no, thinks Janet. Another desperate attempt of reconciliation from Bucky.

"Look, I get what you're doing but Bucky I don't want you to--"

"Jan', let me try. Please."

He looks at her with his ocean-strong blue eyes, full of innocence. Once again, Janet can't resist to those, their full of youth and hope, how to say no?
She sighs, she knows how it'll end just like every time but she still hopes that each of these times is going to be the one.

"Fine..."

"Thank you, I promise it'll work."

"I hope so."

Janet's mom comes back with the plates, she places them on the table, still warmly smiling at Bucky only.

"Come and eat, son."

"Looks delicious, Ms. West."

The three of them get installed before starting to eat. There is a loud silence for long minutes, not even Bucky is talking. He's waiting for the both of them to interact but his strategy is not paying: Janet is eyes on her plate, kind of playing with her food.

Normally a fresh plate from your mom should bring a whole feeling of nostalgia and even comfort, but to be nostalgic some good memories are needed first, and here is not the place where they happened. Here is the place where most of Janet's pain took place. This plate is giving nothing else than flashbacks of feelings of abandonment, suffering, screams, fights. Janet finally put her fork down and slide her plate further before leaning on her chair, arms crossed.

Her mom is finally talking to Bucky, giving him all the love and affection she can. Ignoring them is the right thing to do for Janet's peace of mind, but maybe if she just ignores Bucky it will be like the questions were for her, like she was somebody in the room right now and not simply a ghost.
