Brooklyn Monáe Banks| Brook
📍STL – MO📍

"Brooklyn, will you lift your head up. I will not be saying it again." My teacher, Ms Johnson warned me as I began to raise my head off my desk. "The next time it'll be ISS."

At school, I was more of what some would refer to as the "quiet kid." Unless I was talked to, which was extremely uncommon, I hardly ever spoke. The only people I regularly spoke to at school were my best friends, Nova & Destiny.

"Everyone! Class, listen up!" Ms Johnson interrupted everyone's conversations & quieted everyone down.

"Graduation is coming up very soon. As you all may know you'll need twenty-four credits to graduate."

"Some of you are a bit behind on your work...So let's try to work on that and get everything done & turned in as soon as possible." Ms Johnson began speaking until the lunch bell rang, leading the students to rise.

"NO! NO! NO! ABSOLUTELYYY NOT!!" Ms Johnson yelled and rushing towards the classroom door, so students couldn't leave the room.

"I dismiss you all! Not the bell— And you guys know this! Everybody sit down!" Ms Johnson demanded, making everyone sit down with their attitudes well-shown.

"Why she always tryna do dat shit? Over here treating us like some slaves n' shit." A student in the class made a statement that elicited a few laughs from the other students.

"So, Kingston." Ms Johnson looked in his direction with a stern look at her finger pointed. "Since you feel as I treat you and your classmates like slaves, why don't you stay back in class for lunch and discuss it with your mother?"

"The rest of you are dismissed." Ms Johnson announced.

When Ms Johnson opened her classroom door, I looked for Destiny and Nova on my way to the cafeteria—so that I would not have to sit alone.

"Bro, where the hell are they...?" I murmured as I stood in the same area as all other days.

Destiny arrived soon after, but Nova had yet to come— so we simply got our food and sat down.

"I wonder where Nova lying ass at. That ho never miss school." Destiny said, as she sat down at a random table and chewed on her small bag of chips.

"Her ass probably doing something she got no business doing." I chuckled a bit.

Unless they had anything decent, which was very rare at our school, we rarely got school lunches.

"Mama, y'all sitting at our table." One of the girls came up to us & spoke through her lip smacking. "Imma need y'all to get up... Like now."

"C'mon get up." She waved her hand in a direction opposite from the table we sat.

I looked around because no way her ass could've been talking to me.

"I don't see yo name or anybody else's on this mothafucka." I remarked, as I carefully looked around, making Destiny laugh.

One thing about me is I refused to let anybody talk to me any kind of way. I wasn't scared— I was quiet! If I had to take up for myself that's just what I was gonna have to do.

"Right. Fuck she thought?" Destiny started dying laughing. "I can't take you little bitty bitches serious."

"Bri, why they playin' wimme? They must not know who I am." The unknown girl chuckled bitterly, as she started talking to her friend.
