EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND
ONE WEEK LATER

CARSON MADE his way up the steps to the small clearing, running a hand through his wet hair due to the rain. He hated coming back to this spot. But still, every year on the exact same day, he turned up without fail.

There had been many times over the years that he'd considered not showing up. To forget about it. To forget about her. But no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn't. It's not like it hated the place, or the memories that it brought. Because they were the moments that brought him the most happiness after all.

It was more of what it meant, the fact that he was walking up the steps alone and not with the woman he loves.. loved.

He made it to the top and walked down the pathway, a small smile appearing on his face as he took in his surroundings. The first thing that caught his eye was the tree. The same exact tree that he'd spent hours wrapping in lights, just for her.

"Am I allowed to see yet?" Wanda asked while covering her eyes with her hand.

Carson shook his head. "Nope, not yet witchy."

Wanda groaned dramatically. "Okay, okay... what about now?"

He chuckled at how impatient she was. "Still no. Now behave or else there's gonna be no surprise at all."

Then the spot where their powers entwined together to make the fireworks.

"Carson this is... no one has ever done something like this for me before." Wanda bit down on her bottom lip to stifle the tears she could feel building up. "I love you so much."

"I love you too, more than anything."

And then to where he was about to propose to her, before they got interrupted by the news broadcast.

"It's always going to be you Wands. You are the only person I will ever want. You're my home."

"You're my home too."

However, that small sliver of happiness that was brought to him suddenly disappeared when he came to the end of the path, now being met with the gravestone at his feet. And once again, he was reminded as to why he was here in the first place.

Carson exhaled shakily as he looked down at her engraved name, trying his best to stay calm. Every time he came here he thought that he'd be able to handle it, be able to keep his emotions in check. But seeing her name on the stone was just a reminder to him that he'd failed. Time and time again. That she wasn't back in his arms, safe and sound.

Because at the end of the day, the outcome was still the same and it always would be. Wanda was gone. And no matter how hard he tried, despite the lengths that he'd gone to... she wasn't coming back.

So much for an anniversary huh?

"Hi Wands... I uh know it's been a while, I said I'd come and visit more often and I'm sorry... hell I wasn't even sure if I could face coming today, it's just..."

Carson sighed and shook his head.

"I don't— I don't know what I'm supposed to do anymore Wanda." He admitted. "I've tried everything, I really have but nothing works. I just keep failing you and I'm sorry... god I'm so sorry. I should've done something back in Wakanda to stop it. If I could take your place then I would, without question. It shouldn't of ended this way... it shouldn't of been you. Because it's like I always said... you deserve the world Wanda Maximoff, you do. And I— I'm so sorry that I couldn't give it to you."
