The following morning, Noctis still was angered by his discussion with Gladiolus and Ignis. He got ready but refused to let his irritation to show. He took deep breaths to keep his temper in check.
Prompto saw the prince was awake and dressed. "Heya, morning."
Noctis looked around the room to see Ignis was missing. "Where's Specs?"
"Should be back any minute now," Gladiolus answered.
While waiting for Ignis to return, Noctis pulled out his phone. He checked for messages and calls from Makina, but there was nothing. Only a blank screen greeted him. He sighed while putting his phone away.
A few minutes later, Ignis returns. In his hand was a newspaper. The grim expression on his face was directed in the prince's direction. This stirred a sense of unease within the younger boy. "What's that look for?"
Ignis hands the newspaper to Gladiolus, tone lower than usual as he spoke. "It's in all the papers."
"What is?" Noctis demanded. He didn't like being left in the dark.
Prompto leans in to read from the paper. His eyes widen as he read the headline out loud. "Insomnia...falls?"
The prince couldn't believe it. His jaw drops before tightening as the anger he was trying to suppress returns tenfold. "This your idea of a joke?"
Ignis saw the furry in his eyes and heard it in his tone. He was prepared for this type of reaction and calmly tried to address the prince. "I need you to calm down so I can explain."
"I'm as calm as I'm gonna get!" Noctis growled, glaring sharply at him.
"There was an attack. The imperial army has taken the Crown City," the strategist explained. He was level-headed as always.
Gladiolus took a closer look at the newspaper and read the details aloud. "As treaty room tempers flared, blasts lit the night sky. When the smoke about the Citadel had cleared, the king was found...dead."
Noctis tried to stop him from reading any further. He couldn't handle the truth. "No, wait, hold on..."
The shield then proceeded to read more. "Fellux Naxan Valtreus, former king of Iona, was also found dead alongside his daughter, Makina Hexxus Valtreus."
Noctis' entire world stopped. His azure eyes were wide as saucers from the shock. He felt his heart stop and his breathing became ragged. He leaned against a chair to keep himself from collapsing.
Prompto rushes to his friend's side after seeing how devastated he was at the news. He tried to comfort him but couldn't think of anything to say.
The prince wasn't the only one devastated by the revelation. They all were.
Ignis shattered the silence that threatened to suffocate them all. "We had no way of knowing."
Noctis managed to get his breathing in check and demanded to know what the advisor was trying to say. "What? Knowing what?"
