Chapter 22: life and death

"GET THE DEFIBRILLATOR, WE NEED TO GET HER HEART BEATING AGAIN."

Now Rohans yelling in my ear again, his thick Indian accent echoing through the room.

"Mason move to the side of your gonna stay in here."

I back up, I can't process what even happened.

"ALRIGHT CLEAR."

They start shocking ejs heart.

What if they hurt her? But they're my doctors, they're trained. Everything's gonna be ok.

~Rohans pov~

The defibrillator isn't working, ejs hearts given out and it won't start again. We stop after four shocks, there's no use her heart won't come back. I walk towards Mason, how do I tell him.

"Mason, I'm sorry. We can't revive her."

This is the thing I hate about my job, seeing people die and seeing their loved ones suffer.
Masons starts crying, I've never seen him cry before. He goes towards everleigh screaming and crying, holding her hand. I can't even make him feel better.

"Mommy!!"

I look towards the door and her daughters running in, crying. She sits up on the bed, we need to get her out. I look towards one of my doctors and nod. This is how children develop trauma. He goes to grab the kid but then Mason speaks in between sobs,

"No, let her stay."

I nod again to my doctor and he goes back, standing where he was before.

Both Mason and his kid are sitting there crying on the bed, I've never had a patient die under my care. I've only seen some of my colleagues lose a patient, this is my first.

We all stand in silence watching them cry and scream,

But then the monitor starts beeping again.

Her heart, it's back.

~ masons pov~
The monitor starts beeping again which means her heart started beating,

She came back to me,

To me and lily.

Ejs breathing goes back to normal and the doctors put an oxygen mask on her.

"Lily, look. Mommy's sleeping, she's breathing, she's gonna come home soon baby."

Lily speaks in between small sobs.

"Really? Mommy's coming back?"

"Yeah beautiful, she's gonna come back soon!"
"Mommy's coming back!!"

She runs out to jax's nephew who was with Jax outside the room.

"Jordan, my mommy is coming back soon so you can meet her!"

Thank god.

My ej is gonna come back.

Some times goes by and ej eventually wakes up in the middle of the night.

I sit there ready for her.

Ejs back.

~Everleighs pov~

I wake up and my head is pounding, my visions kinda blurry and I can't hear a thing.

My face hurts but it's better than how it was before, though I can't move my wrists or ankles, they still hurt like a motherfucker.

"Ej?"

Is that Mason? Thank god he's here. Where's lily?

"Lily's out with jaxs nephew he's taking care of them don't worry."

I must've said that out loud. What's going on?

"Mason, where am I?"

Everything looks white, god it's so bright.
my vision slowly goes back to normal but it's hard to open my eyes.

"Your in my aid and care facility, basically my small hospital here." He smiles a bit. I missed his cute smile. He looks like he's been crying.
He's still crying right now,

"Alex ?"

I love saying his nickname.

"Yes ej?"

"Have you been crying?"

He looks away and I can tell he's trying to wipe away his tears.

"No, no I haven't been crying"

He gives a small laugh.

"You liar."

I love messing with him.

"Your lying to me while I'm in a hospital bed. How do you think that makes me feel Alex?"

"I- uh, I'm, um, god I'm sorry ej."

Now I feel bad, he sounds like he went through a lot I don't even know what happened.
I grab his face and wipe away his tears,
I don't like seeing him sad.

The way his face looks when he's sad absolutely breaks my heart.

"Alex, what happened?"

He breaks down in my arms and starts crying more.

My heart shattered instantly.

"Ej, you, you died."

What.

"You died right in front of me ej, three minutes your heart wasn't beating."

He cries like his life depended on it so I hug him tight, his head tucked on my chest.

I died.

I don't know how to feel. All I know is that I don't want to see Mason this broken down.

Tears start streaming down my face,

"It's ok Alex. I'm sorry. I'm back now and I'm never leaving again I promise."

"Im so sorry ej, this is so selfish of me, your the one who went through so much I,"

I interrupt him without a thought in my head,

"It's not selfish Alex, your human, you went through something as well and im sorry.
Im sorry i didn't listen to you when you said this would be dangerous."
