Kelvin's Excursion

Kelvin slammed the door in Desmond's face and stepped away into the jungle, where he removed his Hazmat suit. He felt guilty about lying to Desmond, but he would have told the guy anything to prevent him from going outside. Sure, there was no mysterious airborne illness on the Island, but Kelvin couldn't risk the Scotsman prematurely seeing the surprise he had in store for him.

Kelvin trudged through the jungle, all the way across the Island to where The Elizabeth lay in ruins on the rocky beach. "You wrecked her pretty good, Des," Kelvin muttered to no one in particular as he made his way to the boat to begin his attempt to fix it. Desmond really did do a number on the poor vessel, leaving Kelvin to wonder what in the world led the Scottish man all the way to the South Pacific in just a small sailboat. Kelvin took in his surroundings before beginning work on The Elizabeth. Kelvin knew how suspicious it would look if Desmond had caught him tinkering with his boat, especially after he had lied to his partner about not knowing what had happened to it. But he was also pretty sure that there was no way Desmond had the stones to come after him, so Kelvin tinkered away in peace.

A couple of hours later, Kelvin had made solid progress on the boat. It would still be a long while before The Elizabeth was seaworthy again, but Kelvin was confident that she would be fit to one day return the two men home. Screw the button! Kelvin was sick of endlessly waiting for a replacement he wasn't even sure was coming. Satisfied with his day's work, Kelvin packed up and began trekking back to the Swan, mentally rehearsing his apology to Desmond on the way. Sure, the Scottish sailor wasn't quite who Kelvin was hoping to find that day on the beach, but Desmond did have a boat! So, why wouldn't they use it to escape together? Besides, Kelvin thought, if the island explodes we'll be well on our way to Fiji by then.

Kelvin finally arrived back to the spot in the jungle where he had abandoned his Hazmat suit. He slipped it back on and opened the door to the station. "Des?" Kelvin called as he stepped through the door and once again began to remove his suit. When he did not hear a response, Kelvin wandered through the hallway to the living room. He found Desmond curled up on the floor in front of the couch, clutching an empty bottle of Dharma merlot and what appeared to be a photograph. Kelvin walked over and crouched in front of his roommate, who he could now see was bawling his eyes out. "You alright, Des?" Kelvin asked. Desmond looked up at him, quickly wiped away his tears and attempted to sit up. "Aye, brotha..." slurred Desmond. He clearly wasn't, however, and Kelvin sighed as he realized how much he had upset his new bestie. "I'm so sorry, Des," he began. "I just want to be besties again." Desmond considered this and nodded. "Alright, Kelvinator," said the Scotsman, "we can be besties, mate." Kelvin pulled the drunken Desmond into a hug and sobbed right along with him.
