The second she had opened the door he had felt like he was home again. The smell of her Dragon's Blood incense wafted through that open door, though she likely hadn't used it in a while. Her house just always smelled of it. The scent always making him feel like he was home again.
He couldn't help but notice her slightly disheveled appearance, as though she'd come home from work just to work more. Knowing her, she hadn't remembered to eat some dinner first. She was always working outside of work. Not out of necessity, but out of love for her students. She loved all of them as though they were her own children.
Her shocked expression told him all he needed to know. His attempt at letting her know he was on his way to see her hadn't reached her in time. She was her usually excited self, but something was different. She almost seemed embarrassed. But why would she be?
He climbed the stairs to her guest bedroom, shaking his head with a chuckle. He shouldn't be surprised. She'd been like this the entire time he'd known her. She got lost in whatever it was she was working on, regularly.
"Shit," her soft voice rang out from the bottom of the stairs.
What was she upset about? He sighed as he carried his luggage into the guest bedroom, hoping he hadn't caught her at a bad time. She wouldn't let on that she was in the middle of a mental health episode, she would just try to pretend she was okay.
Just before the door closed he heard the music start, meaning she was in the kitchen, likely throwing together something to eat. Which meant he was right. She had forgotten to eat. Again.
