CHAPTER ; stuck TW // ptsd - induced panic attack

THE SCREAMS AND THE CLICKS OF CAMERAS WENT OFF AS shadows started to move closer and closer to the sliding doors of jfk airport.
the members, all double masked and double vaccinated, made their way to the doors following their security guards and staff as mason paused in the middle of his step, looking forward at the door blankly.
hoseok, the member behind him, tried to speak to him and pull on his jacket, but nothing happened. mason barely moved, feet practically stuck to the floor. hoseok could see that the other's chest was falling and rising rapidly as mason's face stayed still.
it was a sign that usually meant that mason was having a panic attack, but it would usually show in his face as well. his eyes would start to tear up and his face would get red, but none of this was happening to the 97 liner.
he was blank, with almost all the colour draining out of his face and hands.
"yoongi hyung!" hoseok called out, catching the attention of everyone in the arrivals area. "something's wrong with cheol-ah."
the rest of the members, the managers and airport staff circled around them, yoongi and seokjin pushing their way to the two first with a paramedic right behind them.
"hob-ah, what happened?" seokjin asked.
"he just stopped as he was walking. his heart is beating like crazy, though." hoseok turned to them. "this isn't like his usual panic attacks."
mason's body started to shake, now with tears streaking down his face and eyes wide with fear. the hyperventilation started, tiny whimpers and mumbles coming out his mouth now. yoongi held onto the younger's hand, but let go as soon as he felt it, as if he had stuck his hand in frozen water.
the paramedic felt his hand after, instantly yelling for their coworkers to help him onto a gurney. "he's freezing, does he have anemia?" they asked the members who all turned to namjoon to answer. he nodded in response, moving out of the way for the gurney.
as they sat him and pushed him to lie down on the moving bed, he started to cry and his breathing started getting worse and worse by the second. "we need to take him to the hospital now. does he suffer from any other illnesses or mental disorders?" another one asked, the two others taking off his mask and putting a breathing mask on him.
the manager that spoke english translated what the members were telling him; panic disorder, insomnia and anemia were the ones they knew about.
"and post traumatic stress disorder." jungkook mentioned from the back of the group. the manager told them and the three paramedics turned to each other quickly. "but he hasn't been affected by it in years."
"he must be suffering from a flashback of some sort." they pushed the gurney through a back entrance, leaving all the staff, besides the one manager that spoke english who ran behind them, and the members in the arrivals area.
the fans were still screaming for them to come out, now doing the fan chant.
what could they even do in this situation? everyone knew mason was on the plane with them, so it would be suspicious without seeing him there with the other members. armys weren't dumb, they can tell when they are upset or scared, even if the members tried their best to conceal their feelings.
namjoon sighed, rubbing his hand over his eyes. "just act like everything is normal, he'll be fine." he tried to say as a way to comfort the others, but even he wasn't convinced with his own words. "seunie is one of the strongest people we know and he'll be back with us tomorrow and in time with our speech."
the members walked towards the sliding doors to exit, waving at the fans and cameras waiting for them.
"where's mason?" someone screeched as soon as they noticed only seven members.
"what happened to mason?" another fan asked as the members continued to walk to exit.
they all wished to tell them what took so long back there, but even if they did, they didn't know what was wrong with mason.
