Danni

We set up arrangements of a time and place. Time being after school on Friday's and place being media center.

Once I'm in the hallway, headed towards lunch, I hear him calling my name. He had to stay an extra minute to get a late pass and I didn't since I'm going to lunch.

"Danni! Wait up."

I pause as I wait for him to catch up.

"Thank you, thank you so much for helping, I really need this so I can continue my season of football. I really thought I'd have to convince you back there." He chuckles lightly.

"Don't worry about it. That's what I'm here for."

"I thought you hated me?"

"I don't hate you. Sure you can make my patience level decrease rapidly but that doesn't mean I hate you."

"That explains why you've never said that you hate me."

"I'd never tell anyone that I hate them."

"Why?"

"Words hurt Zak and whether I hate them or not I'd never intentionally hurt someone."

"That's really nice of you."

"Yeah, I'll see you in the media center after school."

I've been in the media center for ten minutes and Zak is still not here.

I'm about to leave when the sound of the door slamming open stops me. I turn to see him standing there panting and sweating.

"Hey, I'm so sorry I'm late, I completely forgot. I started walking home and then I realized that we had our first session today so I ran all the way back."

"Of course you did. Anyways let's get started. I'm gonna need yo- Wait, did you say walking?"

"Yeah, I decided to walk this morning since it was nicer outside."

"Oh, okay. I'm gonna need you to send me a screenshot of your grades so that I can understand what you need the most help in."

"Oh, we're starting now?"

"Uh yeah, why else would we be here?"

"I thought we could get to know each other first."

"Sure," He perks up but I'm quick to shut it down. "But not when I'm tutoring you."

Before he can speak my phone starts ringing. I check my phone to see it's my dad.

"Hey, Dad, what's up?"

"Where are you?"

"Tutoring someone, why?"

"And you didn't think to tell me? I'm outside the school waiting for you right now."

"I texted Mom. I figured she'd tell you."

"Yeah well she didn't so now I need you to get out there and we're leaving."

"What? No, I made a commitment to this and it's good for my college applications."

"Danni, Shadow is at the vet and he's gonna be put down so I want you and your brother to spend his last minutes with him."

I gasp and my eyes begin to water. Shadow was my first puppy who's grown into a seriously strong dog for fighting epilepsy and thyroid cancer. We knew this day would be coming but I didn't expect it to be so soon.

"Okay, I'm on my way." I end the call and turn my attention towards Zak, who has sat here watching me. "I'm so sorry, but we're gonna have to cancel for right now. If you could meet me at the cafe tomorrow around 12 ish I'll be able to explain why I have to leave."

"Yeah, that's fine. Hey, are you okay? You looked pretty upset over the phone."

"I'll tell you about it tomorrow."

I exit the building and make a beeline towards Dad's truck. I hop in quickly.

We head towards the vet, my tears threatening to fall down. Once I see him in the office, I immediately start bawling my eyes out. This dog was my first best friend, I loved him with all of my heart, and him being gone is not something I want to be happening. Not now, not ever.

I'm thankful we got to spend his last moments together. He was truly the best dog I could've asked for.

That night I cry myself to sleep.
