Breathing heavily, Jacob jumped over a rock, let himself fall to the ground and waited while pointing the barrel of his riffle into the open. His heart was beating like crazy.

Cold sweat was dripping down his back and made goosebumps grow.

Why?

Why were you here?

He had made a mistake. He had been foolish to think that you would comply with his request and wait for him.

But how had you found him?

The cave was so far from the battlefield that it would have been impossible to know where you had to go. Unless you knew exactly which way would lead to him.

A dim suspicion awoke in the back of his mind.

No, he hurriedly shook his head. That could not be.

He did not want to think that it was a possibility. That would have been treason. Betrayal of his own family.

"Judge...", he muttered. "Where are you? I had left you behind to prevent this."

Something suddenly moved in the corner of his eye. Alarmed, he raised his head, his finger twitching on the trigger. A soft click reached his ears and he held his breath.

A few meters in front of him, something moved in the grass. Shadows danced across the ground. The two deputies were not far away.

From this distance, he could shot them. But to do so, they had to come out from their cover. And that would mean that he himself would have to put himself in danger in order to land a fatal hit. Even if it was only a few seconds, it would still be risky.

Checking, he reached to his belt and pulled out a grenade with tear gas. He had two of them left. If Jacob was smart, he could use them to separate the two.

Again he glanced quickly over at the enemies.

They seemed to be getting restless. Their shadows were twitching more and more, moving and unable to sit still.

If they were indeed losing patience, then that would play into his cards.

Quickly checking the lock on his rifle, he considered the plan for a brief moment and took a deep breath.

"Easy, soldier...", he whispered. "You're doing it for the one big thing. Remember how important this is."

With one fluid motion he pulled the safety ring and activated the tear gas. With a powerful throw, he managed to drop the capsule directly into the close area of the two.

It jingled as the metal hit the stone. White smoke filled the air, mixed with a hiss. For a moment, nothing happened. Silence fell over the battlefield. Only the rain trickled down to the earth.

The cold touch made Jacob tremble. His whole body was under tension, he couldn't sit still. His eyes were fixed on his target. He did not even dare to blink. Above him, the sky began to distort, thunder shook the clouds and lightning lit up the gray world. The hairs on his arms stood up.

Just at that moment, the two deputies jumped out of their hiding place, coughing and spitting, in opposite directions.

"Very well.", he growled, and jumped to the right, in the direction the woman was trying to escape.

Rubbing her eyes, she dropped to the ground, tears obscuring her vision. She drew her revolver, aimed and fired.

Jacob ducked his head, confident that she could not aim with her poor vision. But he misjudged.

The bullet grazed his arm, a sharp, burning pain ripping through his bicep. Adrenaline suddenly shot through his veins. Gritting his teeth, he swallowed a scream, put on his rifle and fired as well.

The bullet left the barrel with a loud bang and hit her in the lower back. Her body jerked, she twisted as if struck by lightning. But the shot was not fatal. Tormented by the pain, she cried out and doubled over.

Quickly, Jacob wanted to shoot her again, but suddenly a pain tore his mind apart.

Struck by surprise, he fell into the grass. The sensation of warm blood ran down his cheek. A shrill ringing echoed in his ear.

The man had grazed him and the bullet had hit his left ear.
Breathing heavily, Jacob grabbed his belt to detonate the last grenade with tear gas.

But the man was faster, leaped three quick steps toward him and kicked it out of his hand. Threateningly, he pointed the barrel of his gun at the Seed brother.

"Don't move.", he growled. "Or I will kill you."

Jacob froze, not because he was afraid, but because he knew he had one last chance.

"Are you weak?", he asked, tilting his head. "Enemies must be killed."

The man above him pulled a face forming a grim mask.

"We still need you.", he said, and glanced quickly at his partner.

In this tiny moment, Jacob took advantage of his inattention.

With one swift movement, he drew a knife, jammed it into his stomach and dragged him down to bury the blade in the soft skin of his neck.

Blood spurted from the wounds and speckled his face. It dripped onto his pants, staining all his clothes.

Choking, the deputy stared at him. His eyes, irritated by the tear gas, trembled with fear.

Jacob looked him in the eye.

"I can't die here.", he said, twisting the knife around in his throat. "I still have to say goodbye to someone."

When he pulled the blade out, so much blood poured out that it made him look as if he had bathed in it. With a kick, he pushed the man off him and jumped back to his feet.

Gasping for air, the deputy lay there, writhing in pain.
Jacob watched as he took his last breath.

"No!", the woman suddenly screamed as if the devil had taken possession of her. "You pig! I'm going to kill you!"

For a moment Jacob stared at her, his mind blank. Blood dripped from his fingers.

Suddenly his eyes widened. His eyebrows rose in surprise. His legs wanted to run away, but his head ordered them too late.

A shot rang out, so loud that I made birds rise into the sky in the distance. With tears in her eyes, the woman clutched her pistol.

Jacob gasped. It felt like a hole had been torn into his chest. As a heavy cough shook his chest, blood dripped from the corners of his mouth.

"No...", he muttered and glanced up.

At that very moment, your face appeared in the corner of his eyes.

Your eyes locked with his. Horror was reflected on your face.

"Pup...", Jacob reached out to you, so close and yet so far. "Run away...go home..."
