josh re-read the small card that had been pushed through his letterbox, after finding it on the floor and seeing his name emblazoned on the envelope.
thankfully his dog, eddie, a one-year-old long-haired dachshund, didn't pick it up and rip it to shreds this time, otherwise he'd have to spend a portion of his time assembling the pieces of paper back together. again.
his mum wasn't too pleased that he didn't get to read her christmas card last month.
he let out a large sigh and leaned on his hands as he sat at his kitchen island, rolling his eyes in annoyance.
he hated this type of thing. just some stupid event where people he hadn't kept in contact with got the opportunity to show off how much money they were making, what a happy life they'd made for themselves over the years.
even though it was six months away, giving everyone plenty of time to save the date in their diary, he was already not looking forward to the event.
however, the only thing making him actually attend was the thought of reconnecting with some of his old mates - if they even showed up, of course.
he had quite a close group of friends back in his time at school, always hanging out together whenever they could, mostly to play football at the field nearby his childhood home.
however, once everyone had moved away to different universities and started new jobs, their lives got set down different pathways and they'd all seemed to lose contact ever since.
so, if this was josh's opportunity to catch up, even if it was for the last time, he wanted to take it. he was quite lonely in his middle age, and as sad as it sounded, he did quite enjoy the little conversations he had with random people on a day-to-day basis, so wanted to take the opportunity for more.
plus, he just wanted to find out which of the typical social cliques actually turned out how he'd expected them to.
he'd always guiltily enjoyed snooping into other peoples lives, especially when karma came back to bite them on the ass.
if the popular, bitchy group weren't acting lavish with money as he'd expected them to, as that's all they seemed to care about in school, he'd secretly be smiling on the inside.
