CHAPTER FOURTEEN:

Ashton's POV

I drove through the gates of the cemetery and started searching for McKenzie. I had no idea where I would find this one grave, and when I called to ask Kellin, he only told me to "look for the fucking grave". I drove for about ten minutes, when I started seeing numbers that were close to the one that I was looking for. But I could no longer drive, because I would be crashing into random headstones. I decided to park the car, and find her on foot.

Driving around cemeteries at 3AM wasn't exactly my cup of tea. But I needed to find her and make sure that she was okay. I only hoped that she was here, because I didn't like the spooky vibe that I was getting. I walked for five minutes, when I saw a small figure lying on the ground. At first, I had thought that it was a vision trick, but once I saw Kellin's car parked nearby, I knew that it was her.

"McKenzie!" I called as I ran toward her. Once I reached her, I fell to my knees beside her and pulled her into my arms. I was terrified that she might have been dead, but once I felt her heartbeat, I knew that she was only asleep. "Kenzie, wake up, baby." I said to her, kissing her as I did. She stirred and eventually opened her eyes, frowning in confusion. "Oh, baby, I'm so glad that you're okay. What are you doing sleeping in a cemetery? Kellin and I were so worried. Don't you ever scare me like that."

"I-I'm sorry." She croaked. I couldn't help but think that this was my fault. Maybe I was the one to have upset her when she called earlier and I was being a dick.

"No, no baby. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be so cold earlier." I apologised.

"No, it's not that."

"What happened?" I asked.

"Mom. She's replacing dad." She told me. I knew that she had been crying because I could see the dried up tears. There was pure pain in her eyes, and I could do nothing but hold her. "I don't want her to, Ash. Nobody can ever be him." She sobbed, and I held her tighter, letting her cry it out. "I mean, I know that he wasn't the best guy and he did some horrible things, but he was still my dad and I loved him. It hasn't even been two years since he died, and she's already found somebody else." She went on. We sat in silence for almost five minutes while she calmed down before I finally spoke.

"If you don't mind my asking," I started, trying to sound as gentle as I can, "how did he die?" I asked.

"He ...he uhm .."

"You don't have to tell me."

"No, its fine. He uh ...committed suicide." She mumbled, rendering me speechless. I had expected her to say something about a car accident, or a terminal illness. But suicide? Losing someone through suicide was a hundred times harder to come to terms with. I could understand why she was hurting so bad.

"I-I'm so sorry, Kenzie." I stammered, unsure of what else to say.

"Sorry? Why are you sorry? You weren't the one to hand him the gun. You didn't make him shoot himself in the head. Don't tell me sorry as if this was all your fault. Don't pity me, Ash. Empathy, not sympathy." She murmured, and I was slightly taken a back by her words, but admired her even more because of them. "You're having the urge to say sorry again, aren't you?" She asked, and I nodded. "Don't. You don't need to apologise for my father."

I didn't know what else to say, but was overcome by a sudden desire to kiss her soft lips. I kissed her gently. I was so scared when Kellin called telling me that he didn't know where she was. I put all of that fear, and the relief I felt when I finally found her into that one kiss. She kissed back with the same passion.

"If we don't stop now, we're going to end up having sex in a cemetery." I mumbled against her lips. She pulled back and smiled shyly at me. "Aren't you going to introduce me to your father?" I asked.

"Okay." She started. "Dad, this is my boyfriend. His name is Ashton Irwin. He has cool hair and likes music. He makes me happy, dad. And he's nothing like Jace." There was that name again. Jace. I wished that she would tell me who he was, and what he had done to hurt her so bad. "Ashton, here lies my father, Joseph Quinn. He was an architect."

"I-It's nice to meet you, sir." I said awkwardly, unsure of what was the appropriate thing to say to my girlfriends dead father. I scratched the back of my neck, and she noticed that I was getting uncomfortable.

"You don't have to say anything." She assured me.

"I should get you home now. It's almost 4AM."

"Can I stay with you tonight? I mean, if you want me to."

"What about Kellin's car?" I asked.

"Oh. I forgot about that." She mumbled. "It's okay. I'll just drive myself home."

"No, you don't have to."

"Ashton, I'm fine. I can take care of myself."

"Okay. Call me when you get there so I know you're okay."

"I will." She promised. I kissed her once again before we each went our separate ways. I realised then just how fast I was falling for her. The intensity of my feelings for her frightened me. But I liked it. I liked the feeling.
