He rushed through the hospital, his shoes squeaking on the sterile floors. Kellin stood from his seat when he saw him approaching, his lips pursed in annoyance.
"Is she okay? Are they okay? Is he here yet? " he asked frantically once he reached Kellin.
"Yes, yes and yes. What took you so long, dumbass?" Kellin responded, rolling his eyes.
"I'm sorry, the flight was delayed."
"Told you not to travel when your girlfriend could be giving birth at any minute," Kellin scoffed.
"I know, I'm sorry. It was supposed to be a short trip and I wasn't expecting the baby to come so soon," Ashton explained breathlessly, while Kellin led him to the room where she had just delivered their son. Ashton was both excited and terrified at the same time.
"Did you even read any of the books I got you? Most babies aren't born on the exact due date." Since the birth of his daughter four years ago, Kellin had become somewhat of a baby aficionado. He had taken it upon himself to prepare Ashton for the adventure that was fatherhood.
"I know, she insisted I go because apparently I was coddling her too much," he chuckled at the memory of his heavily pregnant girlfriend practically forcing him out of the door of their shared Los Angeles penthouse.
After walking for what felt like forever, Kellin finally pushed a door open, allowing Ashton to step inside first. In that moment, his heart swelled in his chest at the sight of her holding their newborn son in her arms. Her mother was in the room with them, beaming with joy. He was frozen in place, taking it all in. He remembered being covered in her blood five years ago, and thinking that he had lost her forever. He remembered the love in her eyes that made him weak in the knees when she finally woke up from a coma three months later. He remembered how he almost gave up his whole career just to be with her.
"Come meet your son, Ash," she smiled up at him. She had never looked more beautiful to him than she did in that moment.
"Hey, baby," he cooed, once his son was in his arms. "You're so beautiful," he whispered, unable to stop the tears that rushed down his face. McKenzie smiled up at them with tears in her eyes, still in awe of the fact that she and Ashton had created life. A beautiful baby boy that she carried and delivered naturally, after being told that she might never be able to have children.
The past five years had not been easy on their relationship. Her recovery from the accident was long and painful, and at times, she had felt like giving up. She had some trouble with her memory, her speech, and they even thought that she might never walk again. Recovery was slow. She spent almost two years working with neurologists, neuropsychologists, physio and speech therapists. It took two years for McKenzie to make a full recovery, and Ashton was there every step of the way.
They spent months in couples therapy after she recovered. They were both invested in their relationship, but they couldn't ignore the issues that had come between them in the past. Therapy made their love and appreciation for one another grow stronger.
McKenzie was so supportive of Ashton's career that she had no second thoughts when he had asked her to move to Los Angeles with him. She took the lead, while Aston was anxious about moving. She oversaw the hunt for their perfect home, and then took on the role of interior designer. But it wasn't just about him. McKenzie's art career was off to an amazing start, and being in LA had opened some doors for her in the art world.
