Chapter 11 - Vanilla Cherry Girls

Arriving at school was actually nice. Rodrick did not drive crazy and Greg and Rowley arrived relatively unharmed, due to there being no backseat. You were worried about a new smell coming from the back of the van, but you were just going to breathe through your mouth and hope for the best. You were just getting out of the van when you locked eyes with Kai, whose jacket was stuffed into your backpack. You looked at Rodrick, who was making some comment towards Greg about this morning's Mission Impossible Escape and how he better keep his mouth shut. You remember a while ago, that night at Rodrick's house, running away to a park, and talking with Kai. Walking back to your house and Rodrick sitting on the steps and being upset that Kai was there. Even last night, he was shocked Kai worked at the Radio Station and then wouldn't tell you why it was a problem.

There was more than what Rodrick was telling you about Kai. That was for sure true.

What it was about or if you would ever even find out was going to remain a mystery.

"Hey guys? You can head in without me, there's something I gotta do." You say, waving Greg, Rowley, and Rodrick inside. Greg and Rowley quickly leave, catching up with some blonde girl in a jean jacket who also looked like a freshman. Rodrick looks at you confused as he apparently felt like he knew all your business already since he was so nosy about everything you did. You finally break eye contact with Rodrick and walk towards Kai who is slowly getting out of his car and searching through his backseat for something and getting frustrated.

"Hey Kai. I have your jacket." You say pulling it out of your bag and holding it out to Kai. He then finally stops searching in his car and looks up at you relieved. After straightening himself upright, he takes the jacket from your hands and puts it on.

"You are a lifesaver [Y/N]! I wanted to wear this with my outfit today, but couldn't find it. Guess I forgot that I loaned it out..." Kai scratches his head looking down at the ground and then looking back at you. "Are you feeling better by the way? I meant to check in, but realized that I didn't have your number and didn't know if it was okay to come over with your guard dog watching." Kai jerks his head to the side and looks over your shoulder. Your eyes follow his and wonder what he means

"Guard dog?" You ask, almost laughing.

"Yeah, Heffley. He's always watching you and always by your side. I don't think he likes me very much." You wonder if something did happen between them. Does Kai dislike Rodrick?

"How do you know? Did something happen between you two?" You ask, hoping for an answer since Rodrick kept dodging your questions about it.

"No, he's giving me a death stare right now." Kai laughs slightly. "You better not keep him waiting. Let me know if you need another park visit sometime, okay?" With that, Kai smiles and walks towards the school's main entrance. You wonder if you should continue going to the park to see Kai. Maybe you should hold off on it until Rodrick tells you why he doesn't like Kai. Once Kai walks away, Rodrick is back by your side again which now makes you think maybe Kai was right about the Guard Dog thing. Rodrick swayed into your arm standing so close once again, You took a small step so he wouldn't be practically on top of you, this man seriously knew no boundaries.

"Do you think you'd be able to come to the Station after school? Löded Diper may be done for their song on Battle of the Bands, I was wondering if you'd listen to it and tell me what you think?" Rodrick had one hand on the strap of his backpack and the other in his skinny jeans pocket. It has been two months already so the song should be done. But he was cutting it pretty close to the deadline.

"Are the rest of your bandmates gonna be there?" You ask, putting your back back onto your shoulders. You should probably get to your math class before the bell rings. Staying off Mrs. Baxter's radar was a goal of yours. While you didn't care for the Halloween dance since you were going to have your party anyways, you didn't want her or the weird secretary, Mr. Underwood, to do more recon in your life. How did that man know everyone's business?
