You once again put on your dress from the Gala. It was a dark red dress that was ruched near your waist, creating an hourglass figure on yourself even when you didn't have that shape naturally. The back was strappy and exposed, but still classy. Your hair was swooped up on the left side of your face and mostly falling over your left shoulder. You put on a pair of pearl earrings. You played with the necklace Rodrick got you. It didn't entirely match your outfit, but you didn't care. You would need all the support you could get for tonight.
You and Rodrick were going to borrow Madison's car for tonight so no one would suspect you were coming. You were getting ready in Mr and Mrs. Heffley's bedroom. They were told you were banned from going to prom by Mrs. Baxter, but you told them that you were going to change her mind and you still deserved the prom experience.
You hear a knock at the door and turn around. "Come in." It was Mrs. Heffley who almost cried when she saw you in front of her floor length mirror. She quickly came over to you and hugged you so tight.
"Oh, [Y/N], you look beautiful. I know you already wore that dress and I'm sorry you couldn't go Prom shopping-" You hold a hand to cut her off.
"Rodrick got me this dress for the gala. It felt so special to me that he would do that... I wanted to wear it again. Plus, I'm pretty sure every dress in town was already sold out, so..." You laugh slightly. Yes, you were an outfit repeater, but who cares? There were more important things happening tonight than a damn dress. "Okay, let's do this."
Mrs. Heffley goes down the stairs first and you peak over the railing and see her with her camera ready. You slowly start to walk down the stairs and hear the oohhs and ahhhs of everyone below. As you walk down, you make eye contact with Rodrick who once again looks amazing in a tux. This time, you did want to take it off of him.
You watch as the flash from the camera keeps going off and Mrs. Heffley gave you posing directions, but you weren't paying attention. All that mattered in this moment was Rodrick at the bottom of the stairs handing you a corsage to put on. Red, like your dress. He leans down to your ear, kissing your cheek.
"You look beautiful," he whispers. "So beautiful."
"You've seen me in this dress before already." You say, smiling at him.
"Yeah, I have. And you still are more beautiful than the last time. Because at least this time, you're my girlfriend." He kisses you on the lips and you quickly hear Mr. Heffley trying to get you to stop. You quickly rush out the door and into Madi's car and to the school.
You park in the teacher's lot of the school where none other than Rowley lets you in.
"Rowley? What are you doing here?" You say, quickly getting inside the school.
"My mom is on the prom committee. So, I got to come to prom. I brought Greg, Chirag, Holly and Fregley too. They're inside, ready to help! Just get behind the stage and wait for the signal!" Rowley ushers you inside and yourself and Rodrick start to book it down the hall. It was almost fantasy-like. Running down a hallway in a dress. Made you feel alive.
You had gotten inside the gym and stuck to the walls, trying to make your way towards the back of the stage. The theme for prom was cottage core, you thought. It was that or some Hobbit theme and you weren't really sure. It didn't really matter at this point as you got behind the stage. Rodrick's bandmates were already there, apparently they were going to play instruments for Kai and Heather. They too were lied to about their supposed loss, but Madison filled them in for you. All you now had to do was wait for the signal.
Which surprisingly was very obvious.
"Please welcome to the stage the true winners of Battle of the Bands, Löded Diper!" You and the band quickly step out. You take your place behind the main mic while Rodrick went behind the drums. The spotlight hits all of you and you mentally prepare yourself.
(For those who want a full experience, please listen to Brie Larson's version of "Black Sheep" to feel like you're actually there)
"Hello again, friend of a friend
I knew you when
Our common goal was waiting for the world to end
Now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend
You crack the whip. Shapeshift and trick the past again
I'll send you my love on a wire
Lift you up everytime
Everyone ohhh pulls away
Ohhh
From you...
Ohhh"
You could see from the stage that Kai was just outside the gym doors with Heather, Mrs. Baxter and Mr. Underwood trying to get in. Madison, Greg, Rowley, Fregley, Chirag, and Holly had locked the gym doors. Which was a fire hazard, but was good for your plan. You keep on singing.
"Got balls of steel, got an automobile for a minimum wage
Got real estate I'm buying it all up in outer space
Now that the truth is just a rule that you can bend
You crack the whip shapeshift and trick the past again
I'll send you my love on a wire
Lift you up everytime
Everyone ohhh pulls away
Ohhh
Its a mechanical bull, the number one
You'll take a ride from anyone
Everyone wants a ride
Pulls away ohhh
From you...
Ohhh"
Once you finish, so many things happen. Everyone is cheering and you watch as Mrs. Baxter storms in, but Madison cuts her off. She shoves papers into Mrs. Baxter's hands, with what you're guessing is the proof for Kai. She looks stunned and quickly stomps over to Kai, starting to yell at him. Others start to notice and stop cheering for the band. Mrs. Baxter motions to the school's security guard and takes Kai away. You quickly feel Rodrick behind you, hugging you and lifting you into the air. You're so happy that you're laughing like a crazy person and you watch as your escape crew, along with Madi, come up on stage to bask in the victory. Heather is off to the side crying to Mr. Underwood who looks so overwhelmed with her.
Once all the craziness dies down, your group of friends all gather around you once more.
"Okay so. Mrs. Baxter is actually expelling Kai and he is going to the police station now. With more than enough evidence, I'm assuming at his next court date, he's going to jail. Heather and I aren't dating anymore.... But at least I know who she really is. Mrs. Baxter also promised that you could go to graduation again. And that she would talk to Mabel about your loss. So what are you guys gonna do with the $10,000?" Madison asks. Everyone looks to you waiting.
"Rodrick and I are going to Maine. We're gonna open up a business and there's also going to be a small stage for people to perform, like Rodrick. Who I totally expect to keep performing at my new business. It'll be the perfect place to hang out at. Like some cafe or small restaurant." You say, leaning into Rodrick. "Plus, I hear the punk rock scene is pretty nice in these small Eastern towns. So we'll only be about 4 hours away from Plainview, so don't forget to visit!" You laugh. Somehow, you were supposed to be under the radar this year. And because of Rodrick, that was never going to happen. And you were glad.
You really were tired of being the Black Sheep. And thanks to Rodrick, you realized that it wasn't such a bad thing to be.
