Madison had decided that she was going to be the brains of this operation almost instantaneously. Because she had come up with a foolproof plan that according to her, not even Rodrick could fuck up.
"I'm right here!" Rodrick said, sitting in the backseat of her car. "And I should be the one driving, too." Rodrick grumbled.
"I'm driving because both of your cars are too obvious. Mine will have us flying under the radar and we can complete all the prep work now. So shut it, Ricky." Madison quickly turned left onto the main strip of Plainview's downtown. You honestly weren't sure where this was really going or what she had planned. She just piled you into her Subaru and hit the gas pedal.
You were taken to the radio station where your aunt worked.
"Um, shouldn't we avoid places where Kai could be spotted so he doesn't know you're helping us?" You ask, taking your seatbelt off and stepping out of the car.
"Yes, we should. But he's not here right now. He got the call this morning that he won Battle of the Bands. Figures since the other entry dropped." You and Rodrick look at each other, not believing it. You were finalists. You could have won. If only Kai didn't manipulate you into dropping out.
As you enter, you are once again greeted by none other than Bavaria, Mr. Underwood's sister.
"Hi Bav, I need a favor." Madison starts, leaning against the counter. Bavaria, or Bav, just smacks her gum.
"Bavaria please? I'll tell you how your Juul went missing and then I'll know you'll want to help us get revenge!" Madison places her hands together, begging the queen of the radio station gates.
"How did you know about that? I had gotten yelled at by Benji's little monster Mrs. Baxter for it. Saying I was corrupting him." Bavaria twists her face in disgust. So it was her vape on the bus.
"Yeah, that's because someone stole it. Someone who works at this station..." Madison leans down and quietly whispers something. Bavaria sits straight up and gasps so loud you're worried you should get her an inhaler.
"No! Why would he do that?" Bavaria looks so surprised by whatever Madi said.
"Because! Kai wanted [Y/N] and Rodrick to drop out of Battle of the Bands so he could win." Madison slaps the desk as if this was the most shocking thing to ever be said. Wait? Did Kai seriously steal the vape so he could blame you and Rodrick? Good thing, Rodrick spotted the name on the vape or you'd be screwed.
"But they did drop out...?" Bavaria questions.
"Yeah! Only because he threatened them. He tried to frame them using your vape. Then Benji... I mean - Mr. Underwood, got in trouble with Mrs. Baxter. So he had to find another way to manipulate them. He forced them to drop out so he could win. I now need your help, miss girl. Please?" Madison had connections, you'd give her that. She was good at rallying people to help. Maybe she could be a politician or something.
"My vape... It was green apple flavored.... That little shit! Let's fuck him up! What do you need from me, babe!?" Bavaria was suddenly on board and ready for battle. She actually got out of her seat at the receptionist desk. She meant business.
"I need access to the voting system. I think Kai cheated as a failsafe in case Rodrick and [Y/N] didn't drop out. There's no way he won. Not many people like Heather and people liked when Rodrick performed for the talent show like two years ago. He already had a fan base. I think something's up." Madi says and it clicks. What if you didn't care about that necklace? What would Kai do then? Not much of his plan relied on anything, but how you and Rodrick would react.
Bavaria nods and quickly walks towards the radio station door. She flips the lock and turns the sign to closed. Whatever we are about to do was probably best unseen. As you walk the halls of the studio, you lean close to Madi and whisper to her.
"You don't have to do all this you know? For us?" Madison could have just stayed out of it and let you not go to prom or graduation. She could have remained oblivious to what happened.
"No I couldn't, but I'm trying to make up for the cruelty of my girlfriend... If I can even call her that anymore." Madison says with a quiet huff. You never really stopped to consider if Madison was still with Heather. You know Madison loved Heather, but man, how can you love someone who does something so cruel?
Bavaria leads you to some kind of filing room with a large computer inside. You look around the walls and see pictures. Pictures of your family. Pictures of your aunt. Bavaria quickly shuts the door and leaves. Leaving you, Rodrick and Madi inside the office.
"Is this Mabel's office? No! We can't be here!" You yell quietly. If she caught you in here, she could blame you for tampering with the votes.
"We have to. The voting system is tied to her computer. Kai told me. And he knew that because he fucking cheated, I just know it." Madison sits down at the computer and quickly gets to work. The computer was already unlocked so she just had to find the results of the voting. "Besides, we can tell he cheated by.... There! Look!" Madi turns the computer screen to you showing you a list of individual votes.
"What am I supposed to look for?" Rodrick asks. You were wondering the same thing.
"Look at the time stamps. They're all similar, within minutes of each other. And then there's votes that have the word edited next to them. Mabel wouldn't be looking this closely if she didn't think someone tampered with the votes, she would just look at the final numbers... Why, you may ask? Because Kai counted the votes for her before the Spring Break trip. So, if we go back to that date, when the voting closed, and the time before Kai checked the votes... There it is! You guys won, not Kai. He changed votes to make it look like he won. Mabel trusted a snake! HAH!" Madison yells out and you quickly cover her mouth telling her to shush. Mable was definitely here today doing her radio show since it was still early in the morning.
"But it's just a competition. It's nothing compared to our assault charges he's threatening us with." You mention. This could just make him lose the competition, but he could still get you with the charges.
"Yeah, that was the case until the gala. Do you remember what you said on stage?" Madi asks, leaning back in the chair.
"You were there?" Rodrick asks, surprised.
"Rodrick, my family is rich. Of course I was there." Madi says as if it was obvious. "But [Y/N] it's what you said your father offered up. The new prize for Battle of the Bands isn't just playing at prom, you promised $10,000. In the great state of Massachusetts, that's grand larceny, baby. 5 years jail time and a $25,000 fine. He falsified the votes to win the Battle of the Bands and then got the award money. Meaning he committed fraud. Your assault charges won't mean anything compared to what he did. They'll get dropped. Plus he blackmailed you, and that's like 15 years. Heather will fold because she would hate prison and she would speak out against Kai.... You can clap now for my genius." Madi smiles to herself and places her hands over her chest. You could kiss her right now. You do. You kiss her cheek and throw your arms around her.
"Madi, you are a freaking genius! We can do this!" You hold onto Madi as you look at Rodrick, who shed's one single tear. He comes over and hugs Madi as well and you all sit like that. In awe of her genius.
"Oh I haven't even told you the best part. You're still playing at prom. In true punk rock fashion, my little Ricky. You are going to upstage the prick. So, go get your dress and tux and prepare for the night of your lives!" Madi cheered once more and you and Rodrick hugged her even tighter. Man, now that you think about it, Bavaria was a real team player. You'll have to buy her something nice later.
Madi had set the stage for you. Tomorrow night was prom. You would sneak in, she would distract Mrs. Baxter for you along with Kai and then you take the stage with Löded Diper and play your hearts out. Then she would announce what he did and everything would fall into place. And you knew just the team that would help you sneak inside.
