(Josie's POV)
The fact that I got any sleep last night was surprising in itself. It was a testament to how comfortable I was with Lincoln and how he put me at ease.
I was not surprised at all, however, when my inner clock woke me up at 4:30 letting me know that there was a lot to do today and that I needed to get to work. I never thought about waking Lincoln up. Instead, I looked over at his sleeping form, brushed his hair off his face and snuck downstairs so that my tossing and turning wouldn't wake him up.
I had enough time for me to make coffee, and settle in to look at some of the report from yesterday when he surprised me by walking in. As he entered the kitchen, I couldn't take my eyes off his chest. It was unfair that anyone could look so good when they first woke up in the morning.
It hit that much harder when he strolled over and kissed my shoulder, whispering how beautiful I looked.
I was aware of the fact that I was bruised, had a messy bun-turned to sex hair and was wearing his sweats. But, I also knew that he meant every single word. I nuzzled into his chest and asked, "Sorry did I wake you?"
He shook his head and went over to pour himself a coffee. He took a sip, before walking back and setting it down next to me. He spun the stool around so that he could give me a proper kiss.
I wrapped my arms around him, and he kissed my cheek, whispering in my ear. "You know a part of this..." he gestured between us, "is having someone to share shit with when you can't sleep." He paused for a moment. "Our jobs aren't easy Josie. On those ugly days that lead to sleepless mornings... wake me up." I paused and felt my eyes tear up.
He was my someone.
I rubbed my nose against his pec, getting a tad distracted by his muscles. He jumped at how cold my nose was and I laughed and then gave him a light kiss. "Thank you. It wasn't yesterday that had me up. It was today. I wanted to make sure that I had gone through everything that I needed for when we get her in the box."
I pointed at my iPad. "I'm just going over the notes from their clean up."
He gave my head one more kiss and then sat next to me. "Need some help?"
I looked him up and down, I wasn't going to turn him down. I didn't want to call Lee and wake him up and I did my best work when talking things out with someone. But, I knew myself well enough to know that I wasn't going to get anything accomplished if he continued to wander around half-naked.
I chose to ignoring his shameless grin as I checked him out and grumbled, "Yes. But could you please put on a shirt?"
The smirk that he gave me should've been a turn-off but instead, it somehow made him more attractive. Even cockiness looked good on him and I couldn't wait till this was finished and we could take some time to just enjoy and explore each other.
I had been playing with something for a while, needing a little bit of a change from what things looked like job-wise for me and now I wanted to run something by Charlie as soon as this was settled.
I thought there was a chance that I could find something that worked for both of us, keeping me closer to Fenelon but giving Charlie a chance to use my experience.
I had guest lectured at the Toronto Police Academy and they had been interested in me taking on an instructor role. Maybe now was the right time. I could take a back seat on the task force and travel only when it was absolutely necessary.
It would give Lincoln and me a chance to truly see if it could work. There wasn't as much of a question there anymore. I had gone from hard avoidance to all in, in record time. But it felt right. My gut was telling me that as scary as it was, it was all going to be worth it.
I was distracted from my wayward thoughts as Lincoln came back fully dressed and sat down next to me. "All right, tell me what they found!"
I scrolled through the report. "Candy didn't bother to hide anything. The clean up team was busy. They found women's bloody clothes, all kinds of bloodstains, hair samples and uncleaned weapons. She either never counted on being caught or planned on being long gone by the time anyone figured out it was her."
Lincoln shook his head. "Fuck. I hate that she was so confident. That she had been doing this undetected, for so long. I want her to be punished for every horrible thing that she has ever done. Her victims, the living that they left behind and the town of Fenelon deserve to know what she has done. She needs to serve time for every single one of her horrific actions."
"Agreed. I would love to get an iron tight confession." As I finished, he tilted his head, obviously considering something.
"I think you could push her buttons."
I nodded and he shook his head, explaining further. "No. I don't mean us. I think you. You should be the one to push her buttons. I think she is going to be furious that you specifically managed to catch her."
I saw it. All the evidence that they would have gotten yesterday might be over whelming, but everything had been sent in for testing. "While we're waiting to get results, I could give her a chance to explain it all, egg her on with everything she told me yesterday."
The way I saw it, it could go two ways, Candy would confess to everything in anger and pride OR she was going to get caught up in her lies when all the results came back in. Either way she was probably going to lawyer up early.
I didn't care how she was nailed, I just wanted to watch her get put away for good.
