(chapter 8) ʀɪᴅᴇ

Katie narrates: buckle up, because that's not all.

[At Carlos house]

The paramedics are rolling Jayden's body off his yard. Jim knocks as Carlos opens the door and says, "Hey." Jim states, "Carlos delevez, you're under arrest for the murder of Jayden Cane." Carlos replies, "Wait what?" As Jim puts the handcuffs on Carlos, he asserts, "He left the station at 9:45 p.m. and asked them not to call you. We got a text from Jayden 5 minutes later telling everyone that he was going to meet up at your house. His wife and kids said he never came home, and when we tracked his phone, it said he was in your yard and found him behind a bush, dead." Another police officer takes over and states, "That's enough, Jim. You've said too much. What Jim meant to say is that you've got the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do will or could be held against you in court." He grabs Carlos and puts him in the back of the police car.

[At Colton's house]

Arthur walks in, very tired from moving Jayden's body. Cody says, "Dad?" Mily chimes in, "Where have you been, Arthur?" Arthur replies, "Hey, umm." He puts his hands inside his jacket pocket, realizes he still has the gun in his pockets, and when he takes his hand out, he sees a drop of blood on it and thinks how he must've put it on the seat while moving Jayden. Mily touches his face in comfort, which only seems to annoy him. She says, "I called you ten times, Arthur, and you didn't answer. It's 8 a.m.." He moves her hand from his face, rolling his eyes. "Well, Mily, sorry, saving people takes way more time than saving pets." She starts to walk upstairs, and when Mily's eyes fill with tears, she screams, "You know what, Arthur!" She follows behind him; all Cody could hear was what! From Arthur before, it just sounds like long-distance arguing.

[ Outside]
Katie walks out with ten bags, and Johnny says, "At 8 a.m., while we really have been out all night, you have weird fashion taste." Katie replies, "Yeah, your taste isn't great either." Johnny smiles, "What do you mean?" Katie states, "You dress like a rich academy student with daddy issues." Johnny lays his hand on his chest in a sarcastic manner and says, "Ouch. Well, you dress like an overexcited yet depressed teenage girl." Katie raises her eyebrow at him, saying, "You can't be both." Johnny asserts, "My point exactly."

As they get back outside of the house, Katie can't help but feel grateful for the night she just had, even if it's morning now. She wraps her arm around Johnny's shoulder into a hug and says, "Seriously, Cody, you are the best brother ever. Thanks for tonight, slash day." Johnny hugs her back, but he feels bad that he has to lie to her. At that moment, he just wanted to run away and take her home, but he couldn't lose his family. He looks down before she pulls away and walks inside.

He follows behind her. Vanessa says, "There you both are." Dan stands by her, clearly angry, and yells, "Katie, go upstairs." Katie looks to Johnny and looks down, "It was my idea." Dan points to the staircase, "Go upstairs now." She goes upstairs to her room, carrying her bags with her. She felt bad. He was going to get in trouble for her. Johnny rolls his eyes. "What?" Dan states, "Where were you?" Johnny lifts up his finger to count, "Shopping, eating, dancing, exploring, you know all the fun things to do in a new country." Vanessa chimes in, "You knew you weren't supposed to take Katie." Johnny smiles at them both. "Maybe next time it'll be the police station." Dan laughs in anger; Vanessa notices and says, "Dan don't "

Dan walks to Johnny and states, "Maybe next time, you won't leave this house alive." He pulls out a knife and adds, "I'm known for burying my problems, son; you don't want to be one." Johnny stands there, not intimidated a bit. Vanessa asserts, "Okay, that's enough; give me your card; you won't spend any more money." Johnny smiles and gives her the card; "it's already empty." He walks upstairs. Vanessa stands there, holding the empty card.



[At the police station]
Ria walks in, and after hearing the news about Carlos, she steps to the eager, tall policeman and says, "I'm here to visit Carlos delevez." She said. He replies, "ID." She hands him her ID, and he states, "Parents?" She looks down and asserts, "deceased and absent." He looks at her and whispers, "I'm not supposed to, but follow me." She follows the man to where Carlos is. The police state, "5 minutes." Ria sits down in front of Carlos and sees how he's still in his pajamas; it was her first time seeing him outside of uniform. The officer stands and watches. Carlos first thoughts were to assure Ria he didn't kill Jayden. "I didn't kill him," Ria replies, "I know." Carlos states, "I was angry; I lost my job, and I was pushed off the case." Ria's eyes soften as she says, "Just turn in what you have on me." He smirks a little. "If I wanted that, I would've never burned the disc, kid," she adds, "but" he cuts her off, grabbing her hand to hold it and looking at her, "like I said yesterday."

The officer realizes the touching and yells, "No touching." Carlos removes his hand from hers and says, "Like I said yesterday, do this on your own; you got this." Ria looks at him with slight tears of frustration, stress, and tiredness in her eyes. "I need you, Carlos," she says. He smiles and reassures her, "kid, you're the best detective. I know you're brave, smart, and strong. I know you can find out who did this and where Katie is. I know you can do it." She smiles and playfully adds, "How did you go from asshole to this?" Carlos replies, "What can I say, I'm good at my job?" The officer yells, "Time up!" She stands up to go as Carlos does too, and she hugs him tightly. Before the officer shouts, "I said no touching," she lets go, and he walks her out.

[At the Colton house]

Anna fixes her hair and knocks, Cody immediately opens it because he's been waiting for her arrival all day, Anna kisses him, and he kisses back, Anna excitedly walks in, "so movie or show, either way I am happy I get to spend today with you," she said, Cody replies, "movie." Anna sits down on the couch, which Cody joins beside her, wrapping his arms around her. She asserts, "which one?" Cody muffles, "I was thinking horror," she states,

"I was thinking about romance."
"horror romance"

Anna chimes, "So basically all the scream movies, Cody smiles at her before kissing her, saying, "I'm definitely down for that." Arthur walks downstairs and screams, "Mily, let it go." I said I was sorry," Mily replies, "really, a sorry is supposed to help Arthur?" He walks out the door; she sighs and palms herself. Ria knocks, and Mily thinks it's Arthur, but when she opens the door, she realizes it's Ria. She says, "Ria." She hasn't really seen Ria since the Katie thing; it was kind of hard seeing Ria, even if she was like a second daughter to her. She felt embarrassed she hadn't reached out even during Sierra's death. "Sorry about Sierra," she said.
