chapter 19, (nightmares)

Katie narrates, "Have you ever heard of nightmares?"

Johnny has been driving for a few hours now. He knew they wouldn't be able to make it back in America that fast, so he says, "Just because we have a long way to Katie's home doesn't mean this can't be fun." As he turns on the radio, when the song It's Going to Be Me by Nsync plays, Katie smiles as she replies, "I'm not going to sing this." Austin looks at her as he grabs her hand and sings, "You might be hurt, babe, that ain't no lie." Haylee chimes in, singing, "You've seen them all come and go." Dana joins, "I remember you told me," Felix screams, "That's what it made you believe in." Johnny sings louder, "Maybe that's why." Everyone sings together, "Every little thing I do, never seems enough for you. You don't want to lose it again. But I'm not like them. Baby, when you finally get to love somebody, guess what? It's going to be me."

They happen when we are asleep, says Katie.

The next day

[At a hotel]
Willo gets out of the car, and as Carlos had to book a hotel far away so they wouldn't be right by the house, she says, "Okay, we're here." Ria turns to look at Carlos as she states, "What are we doing at a hotel?" Willow chimes in, "Because we need a shower." Cody adds, "Yeah, I kind of need a shower." Carlos asserts, "Yes, because él apesta." Cody curiously says, "Wait, what does that mean?" Ria adds, "nothing good." Willow walked to Ria with a smile, looking down into her eyes. She found Ria's height cute, considering she was 5'7. "So girls, share a room?" Ria turns away and replies, "No thanks," then Cody gives her a smile, then she grabs Carlos's arm and states, "I'm taking Carlos." Cody links arms with Willow, as he asserts, "you and I." Willow didn't think Cody was that bad; she actually thought he'd be a great friend, so she replies, "I and you," as they walk into the hotel room together.


[At the Alaska House]
Annais sitting on the couch when Mily walks downstairs from her nap. She needed that break after the fight with Arthur. She states, "If they're going to lock us in a mansion, at least have a chef." She goes into the fridge to find meat, vegetables, and other things and adds, "Who even eats half of these?" Anna replies, "My mom." Mily looks down and sits down; she misses her children, but even if she did, she wasn't really a stay-at-home mom, as she asserts, "I work a lot, so I never have time to cook; I mainly order takeout, but I probably should do that for my kids; I miss them." Anna looks at her in comfort; she didn't try to make her feel bad for that. As she states, "maybe I could teach you how to make fettuccine Alfredo." Mily gives her a smile and a yes-nod.


Arthur walks in again, and Mily's whole mood changes; she couldn't stand to be around him anymore. He says on the phone when he comes in, "I need you and the boys to come; I'm moving Mily and Anna." Ken replies on the phone, "I can't; the boss has us on a Katie mission." Arthur curiously asserts, "What mission?" Ken states, "Arthur, you're no longer in this." He shouts, "Fuck!" Then he hangs up and says, "We have to go." Mily replies, "Wait, what?" Arthur states, "I think Dan ended the trade; we need to leave now; he's going to use us as bait." They both stood. Mily wanted so badly for this to be it for everyone, but doubt overfilled her heart as she said, "I don't trust you anymore, Arthur." He replied with determination, "Then trust my love for Katie." As Arthur opens the doors, they both follow closely behind him.

Some nightmares are vivid, according to Katie.

[At the Canada House]
Dan walks downstairs, not saying a word, and appears to be angry. Vanessa asks, "How are you feeling?" Dan stands at the counter as he replies, "You know, I was thinking how he got past 15 security guards, then I realized that you and I are the only two they listen to." Vanessa had nothing to hide, as she asserts, "You caught me; I let him go." Dan looks at the gun on the counter and tries to reach for it when Vanessa pulls out her knife an inch away from his wrist and states, "I'll slice your hand off." Dan hesitated, but he finally moved his hand as he angrily shouted, "You let him go, Vanessa." She argued, "He's our son." Dan looks at her, attempting to manipulate her with his words: "Isn't it too late to play mother?"

Vanessa asserts, "You told that to your first fifth wife too?" Dan laughs as he states, "This is why you're my favorite." He tries to grab her hand, and she moves, and she yells, "Cut the shit, Dan." Then he says, as he stands remotely close to her face with such an intimidating look, "Okay, Vanessa, we started this, now we finish it. If you even remotely care about Johnny, you'll accept the fact that you're a killer." He walks away after seeing Vanessa look away from him in sadness.


According to Katie, most nightmares end when you wake up.

(in the car)
Katie rests her head on the window as she says, "We should stop and sleep." Haylee raises her hand in agreement: "I vote for the woods; it's not like we have money for a hotel room." Johnny replies, "It's not safe anyway; my dad has probably brought out every hotel in this country." As he pulls over into the woods, Dana comforts Katie by saying, "Yeah, we can build a fire." and gives her a smile. Katie tries to be okay for everyone; she can't even begin to think about crying after the day she had. Felixholds up a bottle of alcohol and asserts, "We should play... pass the bottle; I'll go first. Drink from the bottle if you dated a girl for 3 years for money. Because you couldn't afford a home without her." He takes a drink from the bottle and passes it to Haylee.
