Did you miss me?

I lock my phone and put it back in my pocket before going back to laying on the couch next to Jessy.

I told Jake I'd get right to work on the report, but right now I can't. My mind is elsewhere, replaying the conversation I had with Jason. I feel the weight of all these recent events, a weight that crushes and oppresses me.

I really need to get my mind off things for a while.

I watch Jessy play with her phone. Her gaze is blank, lost in a feigned concentration. She has lost all interest in the television, which is even now on.

I think she's bored out of her mind.

Actually, the fact of being locked up in here for who knows how long, suffocates me too.
It must be the idea of constraint that, subconsciously, only succeeds in making me want to get outdoors. It's like when you're denied the ability to do something and, suddenly, you feel the extreme need to do it. It triggers that sort of urge to rebel when you feel your freedom is being undermined.

Freaking psychology.

"Do you want to watch something on Netflix?" I ask her, taking the remote in my hand.

"Um yeah" she closes the game and rests her phone on the pillow, while pulling herself up with her torso by prying with her elbows.

I suggest a comedy TV series, scrolling through the titles of the moment, and she immediately agrees. A little lightness is what we need.

I start the first episode of the show: Forty minutes.

We literally spend the entire time laughing, with tears in our eyes, commenting on the scenes and eating junk food. We really needed a moment of distraction.

"I haven't laughed this hard in forever!" I exclaim, wiping away my tears.

"Tell me about it! We definitely need to watch the second episode this evening!" Jessy answers me, picking up the last of the popcorn from the bag and tossing it into her mouth.

I look at the clock in the lounge: It's already four in the afternoon.

I really should start writing the report for Alan. Reluctantly I take my laptop, followed by the pen and paper I found in the cabinet under the television, and I go to sit near the kitchen table. I put my laptop on it and turn it on.

"Do you want some help?" Jessy asks, getting up in a leap from the couch and coming towards me.

"Gladly, two minds are better than one..." I giggle, moving my chair out of the way so she can make room. She immediately sits down next to me, also holding a pen and paper. She places her phone on the table, next to my mouse. She brings the pen to her mouth, nibbling on it.

"Okay, let's get started..." I begin, opening a Word file so I can jot down some notes.

I type a few words on the keyboard before turning to her again: "Let's say my purpose is to provide him a written testimony, to stall him and avoid to answer his questions over the phone."
I take a pause, turning my gaze to her, and continue: "I'd like to mitigate, as much as possible, his interest in me without giving him too much information, in short...by staying vague." I raise an index finger in the air, while with the other hand I scratch my temple, thoughtful.

"Uhm, I think you should start from the beginning anyway, without mentioning that you were contacted by Thomas. You know, during our interrogation, we mentioned that we met by chance and left out the details." Jessy suggests, taking the pen out of her mouth and starting to write on the white paper.

I agree with her, addressing her a yes with my head, and continuing with the version: "After hearing about Hannah's kidnapping, I felt compelled to help with the search. My purpose was in no way to hinder the investigation, but simply to make a small contribution to bringing a poor innocent woman back to safety."
