*George's perspective*
After a restless night of sleep, George rolled out of bed, anticipation and nerves twisting together low in his stomach. He was going into the city today with Sapnap, and while he knew he should be focused on that, the only thing he could seem to think about was Sapnap's words from the previous day.
"I'm happy you guys worked things out. I knew he was still in love with you."
George had been happy with the conversation between Dream and himself, at least until he realized there was still a certain uneasiness lurking in the back of his mind. At the time, he hadn't realized what it was. But Sapnap's words had made him realize that although Dream may have forgiven him, he still had no idea how Dream really felt about him.
Dream may still care about him, but George still wanted more than that. He would always want more when it came to Dream, and he hated not knowing exactly what Dream wanted.
George desperately tried to push away all the confusing thoughts while he quickly got ready for the day, and by the time he was walking into the kitchen, he was feeling a little bit better. Sapnap was already awake and sitting at the table, his phone in his hand as his thumbs moved across the screen. As George walked further into the room, he couldn't help but ask, "can't go one day without texting Karl?"
Sapnap's eyes snapped up from his phone, narrowing as they landed on George.
"Can't go one day without minding your own business?" Sapnap muttered back, and George only laughed in response as he leaned back against the counter. He waited for Sapnap to slide his phone back into his pocket, his eyes lifting towards George again as he asked, "do you want to eat before we leave?"
With a shake of his head, George answered, "not hungry. Let's just go."
Sapnap nodded, pushing himself up from the table while George focused on ignoring the sinking feeling in his chest. He had already known that Dream wouldn't be joining them, but he had hoped that after what had happened last time, that Dream might still change his mind.
George could tell that Sapnap was thinking the same thing, and Sapnap gave him a quick, reassuring smile. It didn't do much for George, who only sighed under his breath as he followed Sapnap towards the front door. He watched Sapnap's hand curl around the handle, pausing as he heard a familiar voice behind him ask, "leaving without me?"
George spun around quickly, eyes widening just the slightest bit as he took in the sight of Dream, fully dressed and with a slight grin settled on his face. George's heart hammered hard in his chest, and he quietly breathed out, "we didn't think you wanted to go."
Dream didn't respond right away, but then with a slow nod, he answered, "figured I should, can't have you getting hurt again, Georgie. It's not that I don't trust Sapnap, I just think I'd do a better job at looking out for you."
George felt his face flush with warmth almost immediately, and he couldn't help the eyeroll that followed as he shot back, "I don't need either of you to protect me, I can take care of myself."
Dream laughed under his breath, stepping forward as he answered, "I know you can, but still."
Dream brushed past George, and George turned to watch him step past Sapnap and out the front door. Sapnap's eyebrows rose, and he muttered, "all you guys did was talk, apparently, and now Dream is suddenly your guard dog? Must have been some talk, George."
George rolled his eyes, shoving at Sapnap's shoulder as he strode past him and out the door. He heard Sapnap's laughter from behind him, but George was already too focused on the way warmth was spreading across his body. It was little things like this that gave him hope, because even if Dream couldn't say how he felt out loud, it felt like he was still trying his best to show it.
