C16: his little girl
He treated her well because in that life, he discovered the gravity of how despicable a human could be.
Despite living for more than a few short years over there, Athanasia had been the light of his life in that cruel place. If it were not for his love for Sen, perhaps he would have given his loyalty and affection to her.
That was why, in this third life of hers, he decided he would take on more than half of the pain Athanasia would feel.
The seal he gave her was not a mere summoning circle. It had a few differences from what he had given Sen before.
So when that bright light appeared and Idris threw up blood, he felt like he was about to drown in despair for the second time.
This much pain — how could that fragile girl endure this much?
"Octavius," Idris weakly called out as the knight appeared before him and supported his body. "Take this one to where the princess is."
"But Lord Idris—"
"Now!"
.
.
To be fair, he was unaware that his soul would make a little detour out of his body. He was even more unaware how his soul would enter a terminally ill youth's body.
In the past few days, the only thing that amused him was that odd cube device that displayed images that he could barely make a sense of. Although he had watched several things on that stranger object, he couldn't make sense of it.
After two months in this place, Idris learned that he was in a hospital. The illness of this body he occupied already reached the critical stage and there were no known cure for it. He could only wait for death to come.
And so, it made him wonder, why would his soul enter this human's body?
One day, a woman and a man he didn't recognize dropped by. They spoke of him in a disappointed tone and glanced his way with looks of disgust.
"Aren't we just wasting efforts by extending his life further? It'll be better if he dies within this month."
"Dear, hush. You know the walls have ears. What if someone hears you and spreads what you said? Our reputation would plummet."
"Who cares?! I've had enough of looking after this bastard child! I told you that we shouldn't have taken him in!"
"He's still my son regardless."
"If you weren't such an irresponsible husband, how could we have such a stain in our family?"
Ah, Idris thought while his eyes swept over their arguing figures, a hint of nausea flashing through his eyes. This one feels sorry for this child to have such vermins to be his parents. Even animals wouldn't be this heartless towards their children.
That was the last time they visited. It was obvious that they had already given up on the body Idris occupied. It was that one scenario that increased Idris' revulsion towards the human race. They were already cruel to others yet they also treated their own children as a waste of space.
This body was left in the hospital to live until his last breath.
Two years passed by just like that and Idris learned several things about this world. Unlike his original world, this one did not have magic at all. Instead, the field of science and technology dominated the world. All of what he knew came from that device called television and from asking the nurses and doctors in charge of him.
