Ten years ago...

"Is dad still mad?" I asked my mom, the question almost coming out as a whisper. She turned around tilting her head as she gave me a small smile, leaning against the kitchen counter.

"He'll get over it Elis," my mom answered, wiping her wet hands on a towel from doing dishes before she circled around the island to where I sat. She took my face in her hands giving me a big smile, one that lit up her hazel eyes.

It had been days since my dad had been mad at me and the only reason I wasn't locked up in a dark room right now was because of my brothers. But it just so happened that he didn't want to be around me anyway, so he took my brothers and left to the warehouse. They've already been gone for hours.

My mom had spent the day deep cleaning the house since she hadn't really been in the mood to do much of anything these last couple of weeks. I was sure it was because Paolo didn't come over anymore. Ever since he left she'd been completely out of it and it made me sad.

He gave her what my father couldn't. And now he was gone.

My mother's phone rang on the counter. She pushed my hair out of my face before she picked it up.

"Yes Hector?" my mom answered, one of my father's top men on the line. I watched her face fall instantly as she listened on the phone. My chest started to ache the more I watched my mother slowly start to crumble. Whatever hector was saying wasn't good.

She walked past me still talking on the phone, so I got off the stool to follow her out to the living room, finding her turning the T.V on quickly. I noticed that her hands were shaking and when I looked back, the news was on.

Developing now, a warehouse located north of New York caught on fire earlier this hour. The fire department is still on the scene at this time. An immediate investigation is underway to determine the official cause of the incident and we will keep you informed with the latest updates. Officials have not yet been able to confirm if any individuals were inside the location.

That wasn't just any warehouse.

It was my father's.

Where him and my brothers were.

The whole warehouse was on fire. Everything.

I hadn't realized my mother got off the phone until she got on her knees in front of me. She wiped the tears on my face and I blinked a couple of times trying to find the green specks in her eyes, desperate to find any distraction. It was useless though because I couldn't help the breaking in my heart.

Because that's what it was doing.

It was breaking and breaking and breaking.

"Are they ok-ay?" I sniffled as my tears continued to run down my face.
