Chapter 5
As odd as the last 24 hours had been, I’ve learned a lot. Underground night clubs: Dangerous. Drinking: not a very good idea. Dylan’s dancing; hilarious. High heels: painful. Doomsday group: tricky. Showers: AMAZING.
I was now dressed in jeans and one of Fangs black hood’s I have. It fit me fine and I liked wearing it. It still had Fangs scent on it, my favorite smell next to chocolate chip cookies. I know it wasn’t the healthiest way to get over your ex-boyfriend. But I don’t care, I grew up in a cage, I have wings, I’m stubborn, and I’m supposedly suppose to save the world and go off to Germany with Dylan and make bird babies. Don’t judge me cause I wear my ex's jacket that he left behind when he was tearing my heart into a million pieces.
I make my way down the hallway out in the living room, hearing what only could be described as the rarest sound you could hear, Fang’s laughter.
“Well, then I guess that’s that.”Fang smirks. Him, Maya, Kate, and Ratchet all broke out laughing, sitting around the living room area. Iggy was in the kitchen with Nudge, probably giving her another cooking lesson. From the smell alone I could tell it was chocolate chip cookies. YES! Gazzy sat at the table on my laptop, grinning mischievously. He was probably looking up more home-made stink bomb sites again. Angel was talking to Holden and Star, they were by Fang. Then there was Dylan who gazed casually out the window. I walk into the kitchen.
“Hey Max.” Nudge smiles, mixing dough in bowl. “Look, what we made.” She holds up the bowl of dough proudly. I nod and smile, which seemed to satisfy her. Suddenly my phone began to buzz in my pocket. I pull it out without bothering to check the caller id.
“Heeey Maxi!” Piper cheered laughing. Man, she was perky.
“Hi!!” I beam into the phone mimicking her perky voice. Nudge looks at me oddly probably think ‘What was that?’ I was wondering the same thing.
“You still interested?” She almost purred into the phone. “I talked to our boss this morning and he said he was dying to meet you.”
“I’m sure he was.” I breathe, pressing my lips together in tight line. Dylan is still gazing out the window. My irritation gets the best of me and I grabbed an orange and throw it him. It hit him hard in the back, right on the spin, harder than I originally intended. He glares back at me. “I’m sorry saying that again, Piper.” I say. Dylan raises his eyebrows and walks over to me.
“I said we need you come to the parking garage that the club entrance is in at exactly noon today. Not a minute late, Max. This is very important.” Piper’s cheery voice had dropped down to dead serious. It actually made me nervous.
“Of course. Save the planet, kill the humans.” I smile. That got everyone’s attention in the room. Fangs gang stared at me like I was insane. Angel face got terrified. Dylan looked worried, full of uncertainty.
“That’s right!” Piper squealed getting her cheery voice back. “Oh, and Max….come alone.” She hung up. I shut the phone staying quiet I’m not exactly sure what to say. Tell the flock ‘Oh hey guys, I’m going to go walk into a suicide mission.’ How did I get dragged back into this whole Doomsday group mess? I thought that was Fangs gig now. Maybe I could just tell him about it and have Maya go take my place and they can deal with it. Naw, I needed to deal with this. I’m Maximum Ride; sitting around all day chilling with Dylan is not how I fly. Vacations over, it’s time to go to work.
