Chapter 6
Before Dylan or anyone had time to interrogate me, a high pitched scream from the distance made us all freeze. Then it came again only it screamed out… Maximum. We were all on our feet and we bolted out the front door. Once outside, everything seemed fine. No helicopters or cars coming towards us. No erasers appearing out of nowhere with large guns pointed right at us. No nothing, just another peaceful day in the canyon.
“What was that?” Maya asks after a few seconds passed. I wanted to yell ‘How are we suppose to know?!’ but I realize there was no use in it. Fang walks forward, passing me. He stands on the edge of the canyon looking over. He looks dominant, power. It sucked immensely that I have been crying over him for the past few months. It was almost unfair how much I loved him. How much he affected me. He chose to leave, and I should just accept that and move on. If only it was that easy. Maya walks next to him making me want to punch her.
“Maximum!” The voice screamed. The voice was cracked, obviously full of pain. They were probably crying. Without thinking, I run off the cliff and dive in the canyon unfurling my wings just as Dylan yells “Max, no!” I flew with all my speed leaving them all behind following the sound where the scream came from. It didn’t take long for the scream to cry out again. I zoom around a corner, and almost instantly I saw him. Dodge. He’s lying limb on the canyon floor bloody and beaten. I fly down to him. Gaping at how bloody he was. He had tears streaked across his tired face. I knelt down next to him, hesitating on what to do. There really wasn’t anything to do. The guy looks like he lost a fight with a lawn mower.
“Thank you. Thank you.” He sobs. I wasn’t sure what exactly he was thanking me for but I’m guessing by just coming to help him. Nobody wants’ to die alone, and he knows he’s going to die. “Please don’t go.” He cries as he grabs onto my hand holding it tightly.
“I’m not going anywhere.” I assure him. That only seemed to upset him more.
“NO!” He yells. “You don’t understand! Don’t go meet them!” I heard someone land behind me. Expecting Dylan, I was surprised to see Maya and Fang. They ran up and knelt next to poor Dodge. “Max, I’m so sorry.” Dodge cried more tears falling down his face.
“Dodge, you didn’t do anything to me.” I whisper gently. “Please, tell me what you know?”
“You’re not safe, they will come for you. They are going to kill you.” He said. Fang flinches next to me.
“Who is the leader of the doomsday group? Who or what is One Light?” Maya presses keeping her voice threatening. I turn to her giving her my look that obviously stated ‘ARE YOU KIDDING ME!’
“You don’t talk to him like that.” I snarl. “Get out of here.” She scoffed, looking annoyed by me.
“You don’t get to tell me what t---“
“Get out of here, Maya.” Fang ordered cutting her off. She looked just as surprised as me. She looked hurt as well. Her mouth opened, and I knew she was about to start an argument, but Fang’s eyes hardened. She huffed but she stood up and leaped into the air and flew away leaving us alone with Dodge.
“Are you Fang?” Dodges small voice said crocked. He sounds so weak. He doesn’t have long. Fang nods impassively. “They talked about you. I think they want to thank you for leaving Max. They said it will make killing her a lot easier.” Fang expression changed a bit, becoming a mixture of sadness, anger, and confusion. “Max, stay away from them. You’re the only hope for saving this world. Fang, I know you and your team have been working on saving the world, but you can’t. Not without Maxs help. She’s the only one.” Dodge squeezed my hand tighter closing his eyes tightly together. He was in pain. Seconds pass, as his hand becomes limb in mine. His face relaxed and he wasn’t moving. He was dead.
The fly back to the house was horrible. Fang didn’t say anything and neither did I, there was this horrible tension in the air and I hated it. I hated how Fang was a total stranger now. I hated how it was like I knew Dylan my entire life and Fang was just a sad memory.
“Follow me.” Fang suddenly said. He angled himself to the right landing gently on a cliff side near us. I followed obediently, landing near him.
“What’s going on, Max?” He asks. At first I was going to say ‘What do you all of a sudden care about me again?’ but I held it in. I told Fang everything that’s happened in the last 24 hours. I told him about going to the club, and meeting Piper, Dodge, and Jesse. I told him about getting beaten down in the club. I told him about getting out of the club and how trapped I felt. I told him about crash landing and passing out. I told him about Piper calling and her instructions. “I had a plan.” I admit. “I thought about it, and the more I thought about it the more I thought it would work, but I don’t know anymore. My plan was to pretend to join the doomsday group, and take it down from the inside. Cause attacking them from the outside is barely making a dent.” Fang hasn’t said anything, he just listened intently.
“You can’t go in there; you can’t go meet them either. They will kill you.”He said finally.
“I’m gathering that.” I mutter.
“That guy was right though, you probably are the only one who can save the world. Maybe we could try working together on fighting this.” Fang looks uncomfortable. “What do you say?” I knew Fang was right, I wouldn’t dare tell him that but he was still right. I nod. Seconds later he leaps over the edge and soars into the sky. I follow him keeping my distance. We arrive at the house shortly after that. Fang announced all of us teaming up and I stayed quiet, letting him give the announcement. I was too distracted, thinking everything over. Especially since in exactly 30 minutes I was supposed to go meet Piper. The million dollar question is………am I going to?
