Chapter 20
When I wake Fang was gone, him, Angel, Kate, and Star left early this morning to go spy on the doomsday group again today. I was eager to talk to Fang about last night, but I didn’t get a chance to this morning. So I continued on with my day
I walked to school today, since it wasn’t far. And I wasn’t in a rush to get to school. Once I was close enough, I heard it. The sound of cheering, lots of people cheering, all coming from the school. I hurried along and once it was in a view I gaped at the high school. There was a stage on the lawn and the students, all looking to be in my grade were around it cheering. I look on stage not sure what to see. My mouth drops. Fang and Angel had their wings fully extended showing them off. Kate was juggling large boulders that a normal human wouldn’t be able to lift. Fang was talking into a microphone thanking the principal for having him here today and letting him take us on the field trip to the canyon. What was going on?!
“Max!” Claire exclaimed. I expected to see excitement flitting through her eyes, but this was as far from that as possible. This was panic, pure panic and fear. She ran up to me, struggling for breath. “Come quick!” She grabs my arm, pulling me through the crowd. We ran to the side of the school heading towards the back where no one went. Once we got there, I immediately knew what the problem was. Boyce and his crew were beating Derek and Josh to a pulp. I lung at Mike first, who was kicking poor Josh in the stomach as he lay helpless on the concrete. I deck Mike across the face and kicked him square in the chest knocking the wind out of him. Andrew came up behind me and hit me on my head with what looked like a skateboard. I saw stars, but managed to turned kick him across the face, even with blurred vision. Claire was helping Josh to his feet. Jared ran at me, I slap him. Slap him good hard, hard enough to make hand sting painfully. He stopped and I crush his foot making him curl over making it easy to knee him right in the face.
Felix was holding Derek’s arms while Boyce hit him the stomach. I kicked Boyce’s side throwing him on the ground. Felix goes at me, and I don’t hesitate as I punch him right in the nose splattering blood on Derek who looked revolted. I grabbed onto Derek. He put his arm around me so I could help support his weight. Claire did the same for Josh. We began to run back to the front. I could hear Boyce and his crew chasing after us. When we finally reached the front, everyone was already loaded into the big buses so the doors were shut; I look around quickly and saw that the small bus door was still open at the end. We ran on, Claire and Josh in front of me and Derek. I threw Derek onto the nearest seat. I grabbed the lever that shut the door and pulled it closed just as Felix dove into it. I breathe out in relief trying to catch my breath. I turne and saw Mr. Bruno was driving this bus. Fang, Angel, Kate, and Star sat in the back. I then realized this bus was intended to be just for them.
“Mind if we ride along with you guys?” I ask Mr. Bruno not exactly sure how he would react to what just happened or how he would react to beaten up Derek and Josh. He smiled and nodded.
“Take a seat.” He said. “As far as the school knows I didn’t see anything.” I nod gratefully. Derek pulled me into the seat next to him and hugged me tightly.
“Max!” He exclaims as he finally released me.
“That was amazing!” Claire told me. We looked out the window and saw Boyce and his beaten crew outside the bus cussing and yelling at us. We laughed and waved at them.
“Max!” Josh cheered he leaned over the seat and wrapped an arm around me hugging me tightly then he kissed the top of my head. “I think I’m in love.” I pulled from his arm and rolled my eyes.
“Thanks Max.” Derek said.
“You’re welcome.” I smiled. I touched the back of my head, it hurt like crazy. “Did I get hit with a skateboard?”
“Yeah, are you okay?” Claire asked. Her and Josh sat in the seat across from me and Derek. “Maybe we should take you to the hospital. You could have a concussion.”
“Naw, I’ll be okay. It’s barely a bump.” I wave her off. She looks uncertain, but smartly nods. All until she finally notices who else was in this bus.
“Oh. My. Good golly gosh. You’re Fang, from Fangs blog.” She beams. Now there was excitement flitting through her eyes. He smiled at her.
“The one and only,” He said. “This is Angel, Kate, and Star.”
“Wow, I can’t believe it’s really you guys. We are such big fans.” She gushes staring at Fang.
“What are you guys doing here?” Derek asked.
“We have been going to school after school, warning the students about the doomsday group.” Angel explains dryly. From her tone, my guess she’s explained it many times before. This was the first time I was hearing about this.
“Yeah, and we heard you guys had a field trip to the Grand Canyon today and we volunteered to help chaperone.” Fang said.
“That’s awesome.” Claire smiles, looking at Fang like a love sick puppy. Fang glances at me grinning, but I look away.
“So, Max where did you learn to fight like that?” Derek asks me.
“I took a self defense class.” I lie. He narrows his eyes at me and I knew he didn’t believe me. “What?”
“You expect me to believe that?” He smirked.
“Yes, because it’s true.” I lie again.
“Sure.” He slumped in his seat. “Claire, Josh are you buying this?”
“She just saved our butts.” Josh pointed out. “So, yeah I’m buying this.”
“Me too,” Claire agreed. I smiled at them. Take that, Derek.
“Fine.” Derek grumbled, crossing his arms.
