PTSD is a nasty disorder that can change a person in a lot of ways, including nightmares, and flashbacks, it can cause so many other mental illnesses. PTSD is caused when something traumatic has happened in your life like going to war, a natural disaster, sexual assault, witnessing someone getting hurt, you getting hurt like getting mugged them sort of things. PTSD can develop right after this horrific event or it could be weeks, months even years since you start showing these symptoms.
With Jay his PTSD was different he is from being in the Rangers he was impacted passively when he came home had nightmares, flashbacks and to help Jay he would drink and do drugs to forget everything but at the end of the day he could still remember the faces of the innocent people killed.
when he turned his life around his PTSD faded rarely just with nighmares after cases but nothing to like how it was in the beginning. that was until this case came through intelligence's door. it was an Army soldier who was killing other soldiers for killing innocent people when on tour he killed 8 people in total. when the team surrounded him he had a gun to his head saying he had also done the same thing and that every soldier should pay for what they did and shot himself, as he said them words he was looking right at Jay like he knew jay was a ranger.
After the case, Voight gave everyone a week off and booked them all with the district's therapist saying that it was a brutal case and they should have to not talk about what happened.
it was now day three of Jay's day off and it had been horrific all he could see was his face and the other soldiers face their dead faces, he would drink himself to sleep he would then wake up and carry on drinking. the team tried to contact him knowing it was going to be hardest on him but he decline all offers to talk or spend time.
he was sitting in front of the blank tv with a bottle of whiskey in his hand. he looked at his phone that was to the left of him and he picked it up looking through his contact list and landed on someone he hadn't talked to in years.
"Hey, Jack," Jay said.
"it's Jay. Jay Halstead" he said.
"nice to hear you too anyway you able to get something for me to meet in an hour at the bridge," he asked.
"Thanks, Jack see you there," he said and hung up.
he stood up and slowly walked to his room, he put on some clothes and grabbed his car keys and wallet and walked to his car. he knew he shouldn't be driving with him being under the influence but he needed to get to the bridge and fast.
once he arrived without getting pulled over surprisingly he saw Jack looking towards his car. he got out and walked towards Jack.
"long time no see my friend," Jack said giving Jay a hug.
"nice to see you too bud," jay said.
"so you got the stuff," Jay asked and Jack pulled out the small bag of oxy.
"yes, sir, "Jack said giving them to Jay and Jay gave the money.
"you know you are the last person I thought I would see, "Jack said.
"lives a bit dull at the moment," Jay said.
"well if you want to go out for a drink and vent I'm all ears," Jack said and Jay nodded and walked back to his car.
he sat in his car and put the bag next to him and drove off home. he walked into his apartment and sat down with his bottle of whiskey he took three pills out of the packet and swallowed them. he signed and leaned back with a smile on his face as he fell asleep.
Jay woke up the next morning with a splitting headache. he groaned and moved to his side and grabbed the drugs and swallowed some more. he lay on his back again when he heard the front door go.
"Halstead" he heard the voice of Voight say.
"shit, "he said and swallowed the rest of the pills.
"what the hell do you want Voight," Jay said.
"nobody has heard from you for what 4 days we are worried," he said looking around and seeing all the empty bottles of beer.
"I'm fine" he spat and walked to the fridge to grab another beer.
"Jay it's half 10," he said.
"it's four o'clock somewhere right," Jay said taking a sip.
voight shook his head and sighed" but it's not here so give me the drink" h said taking the bottle out of his hand.
"Hey, I'm drinking that," Jay said and looked at Voight.
Voight notices something with his eyes "jay look at me"
"what," Jay said.
Voight walked in front of him and grabbed his chin to make him look at him.
"you're high," Voight said and slapped the back of his head then walked around the apartment and found an empty packet.
"how many," he said and Voight got ignored.
"Jay how many pills did you take" he shouted.
"I don't know" Jay whispered.
voight grabbed his arm and dragged him out of the apartment and into his car.
"where are we going," Jay asked as Voight sped down the road.
"We're going to med to get your stomach pumped," he said not looking at him.
"what no why," Jay said trying to get out of the car but Voight had locked the doors.
"Jay you could overdose I'm gonna have you do that," he said as he pulled into med and parked.
he got out of the car and dragged jay out by his arm and they walked into the ED.
"hey how can I help you guys," Maggie said.
"he needs his stomach pumped," Voight said and she looked at Jay and grabbed his hand into a trauma room.
she was pressing on her iPad as Jay sat down. "jay what did you take"
"oxy" he whispered.
"how many," he said.
"5 maybe 6," he said.
"dr Choi" maggie shouted.
he walked in "yeah what up"
"jay needs his stomach pumped" she said walking out and leaving Ethan to it.
after about 2 hours Jay's stomach was empty and he was passed out on the bed. Voight sat next to him reading then heard Jay stir. he looked up from the paper to see him awake.
"hey," Voight said and Jay just looked at him.
"so this is how it's gonna be your gonna stay with me get off these drugs your gonna go to therapy and sit on desk duty until I think you're well enough to be back in the field," Voight said.
"no," Jay said straight away.
"It's that or you're not coming back to intelligence," Voight said and Jay stayed in silence.
"wheres Will," he said quietly.
"he's in a conference in New York he's coming back tomorrow so what's it gonna be Jay," he said.
"fine ill stay with you," he said and turned away from hank and went back to sleep.
