SUNDAY, MARCH 21, 1965

Alexandria spent the morning cleaning Kinfauns. She strapped her transistor radio to her hip and danced around to the tune of the music playing. Korky snoozed in the windowsill that let in the most sunlight. She started in the foyer and slowly made her way through the rooms of the house. It was quite peaceful, and it was rewarding when she made it to the end of a room. She'd start to the left of the door and work her way around the wall, dusting every item and wiping every surface. When she made it to the right side of the door, she'd move on to the floor. She'd sweep the hardwood, or she'd vacuum the rugs and carpet.

She loved to clean. It always felt nicer to relax in a clean house than a messy one, and cleaning was always the perfect distraction whenever she was using it to make it to George's arrival home from a tour or a business trip.

She also enjoyed it whenever they got to do it together. It was an easy way for them to be in each other's company without having to keep a conversation going. No matter how long they had known each other, there were always times when their conversations ran dry. And whenever they ran out of things to say, it got awkward. So, they'd do something together. Usually something would happen and their conversation would be rekindled. Cleaning was also a good way for them to cool down after a fight, and they'd certainly gone through plenty of those. It was inevitable when you'd known someone practically since birth.

Alexandria trailed through the rooms in Kinfauns. She cleaned the living room, the kitchen, the dining room, both of the bathrooms in the main part of the house, the foyer, the music room, and then she moved on to the bedroom.

As she hummed along to a Rolling Stones tune, she picked up all the dirty laundry and unceremoniously dropped it into a basket, which she then dragged to the washer and dryer that was set up in the small room just off of the kitchen. While the washer bounced around and cleaned their clothes, Alexandria returned to the bedroom. She threw away all the trash scattered on top of dressers, desks, and tables, and then she organized everything on top of them. She adjusted pictures, put jewelry into her jewelry box where it belonged, put loose change into the little dish that George had on his dresser. Then, she vacuumed the carpet, made the bed with the sheets and duvet that she had just washed, and collapsed on top of the made bed when she finished.

She took a moment to breathe, then raised her arm up to look at her watch. It was already one in the afternoon. The very last room she had to do in the house was the bathroom connected to her and George's bedroom, so she pulled herself up and willed herself to clean that one too. She scrubbed the sink, the toilet, and the tub; she organized the drawers and the cabinets; and cleaned the mirror. She even mopped the damn floor.

When she was satisfied with her work, she retreated to the kitchen to find something to eat. She hadn't had anything since breakfast and her stomach was beginning to growl.
