THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 1965
Yesterday felt kind of like a dream. Alexandria was sure that she had dreamt it all up, especially the part where she had been told that she would have to undergo surgery.
Alexandria woke to a pounding on the front door of her flat. She rolled over and looked at the clock. It was just barely past eight, or in other words, too damn early. Alexandria rubbed her eyes and pulled herself to her feet as the knock sounded yet again. "I'm comin'," she shouted as she stumbled her way through the dark flat. Her hand clasped around the door handle and she pulled the door open. Kathleen waited on the other side, Wesley standing at her feet.
"Auntie," Wesley greeted, hugging around Alexandria's legs. "Where's George?"
Alexandria smiled. "Don't even wanna see me? I see how it is." Wesley adored George, but he was still too young to realize who George was to the world. He just knew that George played the guitar, and people who played the guitar were cool. He was completely fascinated with music. George had given him a soprano ukulele for his fifth birthday last year, and he could play three chords. With those three chords, he felt invincible.
"George is in Austria. Do you know where that is?" Wesley shook his head. Alexandria shrugged. "I don't either," she admitted with a silly smile. Then, Wesley spotted Korky the cat and he immediately left his aunt behind.
"He cares a lot about you," Kathleen said. "Much more than that cat, obviously." She flicked her eyes over to Wesley playing on the floor with Korky.
"Yeah, clearly," Alexandria responded with an eye roll, moving aside to let Kathleen into the flat.
"Did you talk to George last night?" she asked as they went and sat down on Alexandria's dingy sofa.
"I did," Alexandria responded, pulling her legs up to her chest and rubbing at her eyes. "He's got the third, fourth, and fifth off, so that's an option. Though, I should be on my period for those three days. But, he also has the fifteenth through the nineteenth off too, and I won't be on it any of those days, so I'm really considering the latter."
Kathleen nodded. "I'd do the five days off too because you'll need help afterward, and probably for more than three days."
"Oh, yeah, totally," Alexandria replied, raising her hand up to her mouth. She bit her nails, a bit anxious as she thought about her oncoming appointment with Holly at three. "I also just want it to be close, y'know. I don't wanna wait too long because that's just longer that I've gotta worry about it."
"But, if you schedule it a little farther out, you've got a lot more time to prepare."
Alexandria nodded. "Yeah, I thought of that too," she said. "Look, Kath, I don't think there's anything you can say that I haven't considered...didn't get much sleep last night, y'know. Spent my hours just thinking about this, about how scared I am of surgery."
