Pain makes a person feel restless and disturbed. It makes it harder to focus or work. You lag on functioning. With pain, there are two types of pain; physical and emotional. Physical pain causes the ultimate discomfort. It causes severe body aches. Throbbing. It leaves bruising, memories of wounds. Then there's emotional suffering, it feeds on your mind. Terrorizes your thoughts. Contaminates your insides, and rips your heart out.
You become afraid of your own shadow. The sounds of doors closing, things falling, approaching footsteps. Your reflection makes you avoid mirrors, glass, windows. You become jittery. Afraid of being touched. Unsure if it's safe for you to laugh or smile anymore. What'll happen if you ask the wrong question? Grief and fear arrive.
It comes in great tides. To smother you. Drown you. There are multiple reasons why a person grieves. The loss of a loved one, losing a friend, a lover. No matter what caused it, people feel a variety of emotions. Shock, PTSD, hysteria, denial, fury, or shame. Most people experience fear on a day-to-day basis. It is an unwelcoming sensation caused by awareness of danger. Sometimes a person is aware of the trouble that lurks in the shadows, other times, a person doesn't know what is in store for them until it's too late.
For Ava, she couldn't figure out why it happened to her...
March the 28th
The weather was neither hot nor cold. It was a typical Friday night. People were going out. Getting off from work or going in. Bars were open and anxious to make money to make up for the lost profits the slow weekdays had brought them. But for Ava, she was in the middle of closing up shop for the night as she talked on the phone with Lucky, playfully fussing about what they wanted to eat for dinner as he shopped around the grocery store.
The family had received a group text from Assyria, stating that she was fine and would be home soon, but that was two days ago. Things were just getting weird for everyone. Even things at Mirror Mine seemed a bit tense or indifferent, and Ava couldn't figure out why.
"Look, I'ma just fuck around and grabbed some frozen pizza witcho yo confused ass," Lucky chuckled.
Ava sucked her teeth, "You don't even know my favorite kind."
"You thought you ate with dat," he laughed, "All you eat is stuffed crust and dat nasty pineapple and ham shit."
She laughed, "I do not!"
"You wylinggg!" he laughed heartily and she smiled.
"Ok, for real," she cut the lights to her office off, "I don't want pizza tho, Luck... can we have burgers?"
"What kind? They got all kinds of shits in dis bitch."
"Let me see," she spoke, heading toward the breakroom and cutting the light out as well.
Seconds later, the incoming FaceTime call came in and she answered, "Hmm..." she pursed her lips and stared at the options, "Turkey burgers."
"Wannabe vegan ass," he shook his head but opened the freezer and grabbed the box of turkey burgers.
"Oh, please," she giggled, "You know you love those."
"I love being able to taste my food," he gave her a look and she busted out laughing.
"Boohoo," she teased, heading toward the back, "Kelly wants to do another double date," she added.
Lucky nodded, heading down the aisle, "When?"
"Tom-" the bell chiming caught her attention. "I could have sworn I locked tha' door."
"Somebody walked?"
