I checked my phone one last time as I walked briskly to the Principal’s office. She had called me to help her with something a few hours before school started. I tucked my sampaguita into my dark maroon hair as it constantly tried to fly away. I opened the wooden door to her office and peeked inside. Her back was turned toward me, showing off her ebony ponytail. She seemed to be talking to a student. From where I stood I could see a strange gravity defying curl, sticking up from a lock of hair. “Oh Maria.” She said turning toward me. “Thank you for coming to school so early.” She smiled. “Meet Mr. Im Yong Soo.” The man she was talking to stood aside so I could actually see him and waved. "man-na-suh pan-gop-sumnida" He said bowing. My eyes widened at the sight before me. It was Im Yong Soo, the famous K-Pop Artist from the band ‘Seoul Sounds.’ It was my first time meeting him like this. I would see him sometimes during World Summits since we were the personifications of countries but never this up close and alone.
“Um… Hello.” I said shyly. I said reaching out to shake his hand. I then remembered about Korean customs, the younger would bow, but the older would initiate the handshake. Confidence flowed through my veins as I internally congratulated myself for remembering such small details. “So what brings you to my country?” I asked the younger nation. “I am here to work on my English. The Philippines is the closest country with the best English. So I wondered if you could help to teach me.” He said bashfully. “Oh… Of course. You’re always welcome to come here.” I smiled at him.
I said goodbye to the Principal as we walked out of her office. I took him to a nice shady spot where I liked to study when I was alone. “This is one of my favorite spots to study. I said sitting under the shade of the Flame Tree. “So how is your English now? How much do you need to learn?” Is asked him. He sat next to me and answered. “I studied English in South Korea but I needed to go somewhere to practice. The Philippines just came to mind.” He said with a light smile. “I’m glad to be here though. I don’t really get to talk to you often.” He said with a slight frown. “Well you have your own country’s problems to deal with and don’t forget you’re also a K-Pop star. It doesn’t sound like you have much free time at all.” I said studying a fallen leaf. “I know.” He sighed. “I go back on tour in a year… wait, how do you know I’m in a K-Pop band?” He said smirking. My cheeks turned crimson. “Well you are a very popular singer here in The Philippines.” I said. “Hey, after school finishes do you want to come with me to get some halo-halo? It is one of my favorite treats and since you’re pretty much new here it would proper for you to try it.” I said smiling. “Sure!”
The school day dragged on as I sat on one of the low fences waiting for Yong Soo. I saw him talking to the Principal, probably about his first day. I jumped down from where I sat and went to meet him. “So have you been here before?” I asked him when I caught up to him. “Well, no. I’m excited to see new things though.” He said. “Well the restaurant where they make the best halo-halo is this way.” I said pointing in its direction. We walked leisurely talking about our favorite songs. Once we made it to the restaurant, I talked to the server and I ordered two halo-halos for us. When our order was ready, I held it out for him to take. “gamsahabnida, oh… it means thank you in Korean.” He said. “You’re welcome.” I said taking a sip. “I’m glad that I can show you around.” I added. “It’s really nice here. You have a beautiful home.” He said trying his beverage.
“So where do you live? Do you want me to take you home?” Yong Soo asked. The sky was gradually darkening as we walked under the setting sun. “You’re the guest shouldn’t I be the one escorting you home?” I said playfully. “I just want to be a gentlemen, like that PSY song still playing on the radio.” He joked. “But it is getting late, I don’t want your family to worry about you.” He said seriously. “It’s just a few blocks down.” I said as we walked beside each other. I heard the buzzing of bugs in the bushes and lost myself in the soothing sound. I dreaded the thought of this wonderful day ending. I slowed my steps and glanced at the boy escorting me home. His curl swayed as he walked and his face was calm and a soft smile lit up his face. I sighed as I saw my house come into view. “It’s just down the road.” I said with a slight frown. A hint of concern showed on his face. “Hey, you seem as if you’ll never see me again.” He said trying to lighten the mood. I pulled out my key and opened the door to my house. “Thanks for taking me home, and spending the day with me.” I said with a slight blush dusting my face. “I had fun tonight, I’ll see you tomorrow.” He said with a small wave. I waved back and waited until he walked away to close the door. I leaned my back against the door and sighed. Hopefully I’d see him soon in my dreams.
