Sasuke's eyes settled on a plushie that sat, carefully leaning on the arm of the couch, next to him in the living room. The last time he come for a visit it wasn't there, so he found it new and strange. "Oh, and Niisan gave me that plushie for my birthday!" Sarada pointed out, a little embarrassed. She had told herself that she was grown, but couldn't resist the adorable panda plushie her brother had gifted her on her special day. Just the other night, Sarada and Sakura had watched a movie and fell asleep on the couch. Since (Y/n) hadn't been able to join them for movie nights, like he usually did, as he had been absent from home, it occurred to Sarada that the panda plushie could watch movies in his place. But, she had forgotten to put it back in her room.
"Where's (Y/n)?" Sasuke asked, seemingly switching topics. He had just arrived a minute ago and, since it was a matter of spontaneous luck to get one of his visits, Sarada was already making the most of it by telling him about how she was doing.
Sarada felt a sting on her chest; "It was my birthday last month," She felt the need to point out, yet a second time.
It was this time around that Sasuke took the hint, but hadn't a clue about what was expected of him to say. "Don't think I forgot about it," Was all he could come up with, nothing else. At her lack of a response, Sasuke looked at her curiously and asked, "Did I say something wrong?"
"Yes," Sarada's answer was quick-tongued, "You could have told me: Happy LATE Birthday, or Sorry I couldn't be here but, Happy Birthday," Sarada remarked as she crossed her arms over her chest and sat upright.
"I did try my best to be here, but since I couldn't I told your mom to tell you happy birthday on my behalf. Did she not tell you?" Sasuke explained, his pale skin turning paler. Honestly, he tried not to facepalm or groan at that very moment- he would never understand women.
"Besides men in novels, I don't think there are any good, sensitive men out there," Sarada said, emphasizing the out there while making eye contact with her father.
"Speaking of," Sasuke interrupted, switching topics to something else, a topic that he could handle; "How's (Y/n)? I didn't see him when I came in".
"That knucklehead isn't home," She said at first, just to see how Sasuke would react. But, Sasuke had been better than she anticipated at reading her and did not react to her comment. Sarada took a deep breath, then uncrossed her arms, but did not direct a word to Sasuke.
There was a brief silence before Sarada could tell him, and when she did, her anger had melted away and was replaced by a nervous fidget.
"Niisan was recently involved in an attack outside Konoha during one of his missions," the soft look in her eyes, revealed how much she cared for her older brother.Sasuke's response was just as worrisome, "What happened?"
"He doesn't like to talk about it, so I don't know," Sarada told Sasuke with a shrug. "Anyways," She said, raising from her seat, "I'm going to take a shower before dinner, so I better hurry up, since I have training first thing tomorrow morning. But, maybe mom can answer your question". Sasuke nodded and waited until Sarada was out of sight to leave the living room.
