Alic's POV:
"Shawn what are you doing up here?" I asked. "I followed you, obviously." I laughed lightly.
It's funny how Shawn is always the one to make me happy when I'm sad. I remember how much effort he would go through to just make me laugh.
*Flashback*
It was rainy and gloomy. Little 11 year old me was sitting on the steps outside my house.
My mom wasn't home and I couldn't get inside the house. Which means I'm not going to my free guitar lessons.
If your wondering, I have to go inside and get my guitar that I bought, with doing many lemonade stands and selling cookies. It's not the best guitar but it better then nothing.
I decided I shouldn't sit outside, I could get sick and miss many more lessons. Plus, I can't miss school. I love school, actually I love anything and everything that takes time away from me having to see my mom.
I got up and started to run. Going through puddles, my $10 Walmart shoes got soaked and the water started to seep through to my socks.
Why can't I have a regular mom? A mom that deals with her loss and gets over it, except for drinking and just sit in the sadness. Why can't I have a loving mother, who takes me to my guitar lessons, get me nice shoes, who will be there for me when I need her most. I just want someone to trust.
I used to trust my mom. She would always encourage me that my dad would come home. That he will make it and come back to hug me. We would always video chat him, while he was at base. He would tell us stories about what happened in his training. We would tell him how much fun we had watching movies and painting each other nails.
The last time I talked to him I told him about Matt and Shawn. "Then they threw their food at each other." I laughed telling him the food fight Matt and Shawn started. He laughed with me. "I'm glad you're making friends Zandi." I loved that nickname. Nobody called me that except for him. Only him.
"Matt is really funny. I was eating gummy bears, and he told me a joke. I almost spit them all over him! That would have been bad, wouldn't it?"I questioned.
My dad laughed again. "Yup, he would be grossed out by your girl spit." He smiled. "He would not!" I protested. "Matt and I are good friends. Shawn is quiet and shy, but really fun to be around. You could tell he cares about people." I smile at the thought about Shawn.
"I would love to meet Matt and Shawn when I get back home." My dad smiled.
I squealed in excitement. "Daddy, when are you coming home?" I asked. "In 2 weeks baby. I'm coming home and staying home." My smile was so big, I swear nothing could wipe it off.Nothing did. I told Matt and Shawn about my dad, and how he wanted to meet them. I smiled everyday. Every morning, as soon as my eyes open, to every night when my eyes would close.
I counted down. I can tell my mom was excited. She would take non stop about dad.
Then, a week before he would come home. We got a call. A horrible call saying my dad died. My dad was in the army. They said he went out with the night team and his night vision goggles weren't working, so he didn't see the trip wire that he set off.
I don't know how long I cried for, I just knew things weren't going to be the same.
The day of his funeral, his buddies from his team have me a letter. I was utterly confused, but quickly opened it to see what it was about.
I unfolded the paper and started to read:
Dear Aliczandreia,
If you receive this letter, then I lost the battle. I lost the battle on the field and the battle I made to get home to you and your mother. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, that I didn't come home. I didn't get to give you one last hug, or one last story.
This isn't the end though. You still have a big life ahead. I can see it now. You chasing your dreams, becoming a women, dating, getting married, and having children. Zandi you have so much coming for you, so don't ruin it.
Even though I'm gone physically, doesn't mean I'm gone spiritually and mentally. I believe you can do anything you want to do in life baby girl. Just believe in yourself like I believe in you. If you want to be a singer be a singer! I've heard you sing while video chatting mom, she also sent me a few videos of you performing at some festivals. I swear you get that beautiful voice from me.
Just know I believe in you. I will be watching over you and your mother. Don't ever give up. Things only get better. I promise you things only get better.
I love you...forever and always,
Your dad.I still have the letter. I never let it leave my house. I re-read it every night while I wear one of his shirts to bed. I miss him a lot.
Tears were now falling rapidly down my face, blending in with the rain. I was now standing in front of a house I come over almost everyday except for the days of my guitar lessons.
I walk up the 2 steps to get onto his red mini front patio. I go to his large front door and knock. I stand there quietly crying. Waiting for someone to comfort me. That's what I need right now, someone to comfort me. Someone I trust to comfort me.
The front door opened and revealed Shawn. "Hey Alic." He smiled, but noticing my frown. His smile faded quickly. "What's wrong?" He asked. He let me in and I leaped into his arms.
"My...dad. I miss...him...so m-much." I sobbed out. He didn't say anything but "Shh, it's okay." and "Everything will be alright." We just sat there by his door, on the floor. Me in his arms as I cried into his shoulder.
After about 10 minutes, my cries almost stopped. He rubbed my back and played with my hair to help me calm down.
I fully stopped and took my head away from his shirt, only to see 2 big tear stains in his favorite shirt. "Oh I'm sorry Shawn I didn't mean too." I was sure I was freaking out.
He gasped. "GURL! This shirt was 200 freaking dollars." He said in a high squeaky girl voice. I laughed feeling a bit better.
He smiled at my laugh and said "Come on, lets get you cleaned up. If you want we can ask if you can sleep over."
The thought of Shawn making me smile and forget about my dad, like I wanted to do. Made me agree. I always needed bestfriend time.
*End of flashback*
"Why is it always you saving me from darkness?" I asked Shawn, looking him directly in the eyes.
He shrugged. "Maybe you have your fairy tale twisted." He paused for a moment. "I could be you price charming, while Matt is the dragon keeping you from me."
