"Why are you laughing Jisung?" Felix's voice was sombre and I couldn't take him seriously. There was no way this was happening.
"Stop it Lix. This isn't funny." The smile faded from my face and he gently took my hand. He led me downstairs and I could hear our mother wailing loudly.
I stepped into the kitchen and Mom shakily raised the lit cigarette to her mouth. She took a long puff and coughed and spluttered.
We both broke down as our Mother sobbed. Huge tears splattered loudly against the table. Our Father was actually gone. I had thought it was some cruel joke.
But this was serious.
"Eo-Eomma." I whispered as tears began dripping from my chin. I could feel Felix shaking next to me and I approached her. I went to take the cigarette and she fought me on it, but I wrestled it from her hand. My mother wasn't usually a smoker.
"Stop it!" Her hand slammed into my face and then she looked at me in horror. I gently touched my stinging cheek and Felix came to throw his arms around her.
"Please don't Eomma." He pleaded.
"I-I'm so sorry. I-I..." She trailed off and began wailing once more as she looked at me in horror. I stubbed out the cigarette in the already full ashtray and forced a bitter smile through my tears.
"It's ok Eomma. Everything will be OK." I joined her and my brother in their embrace as the Lee household was shaken to the very core.
I was adopted when I was six, but they had all treated me like I was theirs. Especially my father. He made sure I was included in everything we did and from day one we had bonded deeply.
More deeply than him and Felix even. He was my best friend and protector and now, now I would never see him again.
My sobbing overshadowed my Mom's wailing and I dropped to the ground.
"I didn't tell him I loved him today." I sobbed. I had been in such a hurry to go to the arcade, I had forgotten. I would never forgive myself.
I laid in my bed and tried to pretend this was all a dream. A sick horrible nightmarish dream that I would wake up from.
"Hyung, are you awake?" I whispered quietly into the unusually still night.
"Mmm" He replied quietly. Mom had drunk herself to sleep and we didn't want to wake her. She was falling apart without Dad, and we had to do our best to take care of her.
"What do we do now?" I asked in the darkness to my brother. Felix paused, clearly pondering how he was going to answer this question. It was a big question.
"Survive." It was the only thing he could think of and I frowned.
This world had been cruel enough to us, and now, now it was as though the entire universe had chosen us to suffer when no one else did.
"What if we can't?" I asked as tears stung my eyes once more. The thought of never seeing my father again hurt me more than anything ever had.
"We don't have any other option." Felix murmured.
That was when I knew, it was time to grow up.
