We waited for the sound of Mom's snoring before we even dared step out of the room. I stood by her bedroom door and indicated to the others to head down to the study. My heart was pounding in my ears and I could barely see them in the dark.
This was it. The moment of truth.
I peered into the darkness and heard the door click as it opened. Jin was holding my clammy hand tightly. I was so apprehensive about what we might uncover.
The light from Leeknow's phone switched on and we began heading for the drawers. The ones he always kept locked. Leeknow inserted they key Ji and I had managed to steal a copy of and the click indicated it was open. Jin squeezed my hand and I grinned.
"We don't have long. Dad could turn up at any minute. Take as many pictures as you can and read whatever you can. We need to capture as much of this as possible. But try not to disturb too much." Min instructed. We all agreed and set to work.
Ten minutes was all we dared stay. We took picture after picture and I read as much as I could in the dim light of our phones.
It was mostly boring business figures and nothing of any substance jumped out at me which was frustrating. I was hoping we would find something, anything, that would be a smoking gun for us.
Then the headlights appeared.
He was here. We had to get out.
"Hurry!" Min hissed as we began placing everything back. The car slammed in the darkness, and I jumped, dropping the stack of papers I was holding.
"Shit!" I hissed as we began gathering them up, panic had well and truly set in, and my shaky hands were not cooperating with me.
We quickly stuffed them back into the drawers and Jin and I went first, I stopped at the door and waited. No one was getting left behind.
"Min! Hurry!" I called as Hyunjin ran up the stairs. He appeared through the gloom and I grabbed his wrist. We tore up the stairs after Hyunjin.
His keys were in the front door. I could hear them jingling and we only had seconds to get into the room. My heart was racing like never before. I was praying he hadn't seen our lights in the study as he had rolled up. That would be game over.
We would find out soon enough.
Little did we know, we had unlocked a major peice of evidence in our investigation into my father's death. We just had to decipher the code and find out why, why anyone would want my precious father dead.
"Quickly!" I rushed back to the room and slammed the door as Lix and Min darted in. We all flopped down to the floor and leaned hard against the door. I clutched my shirt. We were all panting like dogs and I heard the front door slam.
We may have gotten away with it. We all held each others hands as we heard his heavy footsteps coming up the stairs. I held my breath and squeezed my eyes shut, praying he would just go to bed.
He did.
I let out my breath and leaned my head back against the door. I was still squeezing Jin and Min's hands tightly and I didn't think I would ever be able to relax again. Nausea was rising from a deep dark pit in my stomach. We all sat, not daring to move or say a word. The danger we had just put ourselves in was bouncing off of every wall in the room, radiating through us all. Freezing us in our current positions.
"Fuck, that was too close." I breathed the words out, finally breaking the silence. I dropped my tense shoulders and kept my eyes closed as I tried to calm my racing heart.
"Way too fucking close." Minho murmured next to me. He took my hand and kissed the back of it softly. I rolled my head onto his shoulder and kissed his cheek. I was glad we were safe.
