So in this part of the book lord of the fleas we see Petey with a round tail

That means that that happened before his tail got flat what if his dad got mad or something and beat him? Wait that dosent make sense because he wouldn't make fun of him forget it or wait what if the F.L.E.A.S did it? Or wait he said that he didn't hear of them afterwards but he could have been lying to not remind himself of his tail?
