Chapter Twenty-Seven
Itachi slowly turned around to face Deidara with shame written across his features. The blonde’s eyes were wide, his surprise clearly dominating his expression. This was the first time that Deidara ever saw Itachi lose control over himself and it was something the blonde truly disliked at the moment. Itachi was a dangerous being, and if he allowed his anger and frustration to take over like that, Deidara feared for the well-being of whoever was around to witness Itachi’s rampage. “Sasuke will never have another opportunity when it comes to being at Serenity’s side. His need to avenge our clan came first and he chose it over someone as precious as Serenity. He made a mistake and I’m glad for it; if it wasn’t for him messing up, she would never have settled into my arms willingly. She is mine and I am hers. She will never want to be around Sasuke for the pain he had placed upon her young shoulders.” Itachi spoke slightly above a whisper, hoping that his scene didn’t wake Serenity. Deidara remained quiet as Itachi hesitated on the spot; it was obvious to the Uchiha that their conversation was over and it seemed like the right time to have his conversation with Rei-dono. Itachi excused himself as he left his room; when Deidara could no longer hear Itachi’s footsteps down the hallway, he released a long sigh. It was just hard for him to understand everything that had happened in the period of one day, but he was just glad that it was over. Deidara looked over at Serenity sleeping in the bed, looking like a fragile doll still in her nightgown.
A sad smile pulled at his lips. The blonde was happy to finally be alone with the kunoichi, but it was only a matter of time before she would be ripped away from him. Deidara pushed a stray hair behind her ear as she stirred in her sleep; sadness flowed in his veins because Deidara was losing the only companion he had in the Akatsuki. Serenity had talked to him whenever he felt lonely, made him smile when he was sad, and treated him like the human that he was. “I know that you can’t hear me, but it seems like the perfect time for me to tell you that I will always love you and be here for you if you ever need me, hmm. Just like Itachi, I knew there was something special about you the first moment I lay eyes on you. But Itachi will always be the lucky man to have the right to brace his arms around you. For that reason, I’m proud to be considered your friend here in the Akatsuki. You’re definitely in for a surprise when you wake up, yeah. And I will be here to make things better…” Deidara spoke to the sleeping girl, pouring his heart and soul into his words and hoping that her subconscious was able to hear him. It was then that he felt silly for even bothering to speak to her; Serenity was obviously deep in sleep and would have no recognition of this conversation. He stood up then to stretch his legs; Deidara was feeling a cramp begin to crawl up his leg to his thigh. The numbness began to die away once he strolled over to the bookcase on the far left wall of the room.
Deidara’s hands touched the spines of the old books, several were bingo books but others were fictions and fantasies. He pulled one out and began to flip through the pages, needing something to do while he was on duty. Serenity would most likely be asleep for a few more hours and Itachi might be gone awhile as he spoke to Rei-dono. Deidara replaced the book, finding it quite boring as he decided on a bingo book. As he flipped through the pages, a shy smile pulled at his lips when he encountered a picture of himself with a small description below it. Reading the description, he heard a small noise from behind him. Deidara was quick with his hands as he dropped the bingo book, his hand clutching a kunai as he pivoted on the spot. His eyes widened when he realized that Serenity was staring at him from across the room; a look of pain and confusion was settled across her features as she continued to watch him through her bright eyes. “Deidara-san, what are you doing with that kunai in your hand? You should put it away before you hurt yourself. And what exactly am I doing in here?” Her voice was soft as she struggled to sit up; Deidara quickly replaced the fallen book back in its position on the self and raced back over to the bed. He helped her sit up with her back against the mound of pillows. She smiled up at the blonde, but a pained look entered her eyes. Her gaze dropped and she brought her hands closer to her face, examining the burns on her fingertips. It was then that confusion settled deep within Serenity as the burns slowly began to fade.
