Chapter Four
I opened the door to my apartment and my mouth fell open from the shock that overwhelmed me. The apartment was completely and utterly trashed… All of my stuff had been thrown onto the ground, scattered all over the apartment. I slowly walked into the apartment and closed the door behind me, my body slightly stiff as I tried sensing any presences within my home. I made sure to lock the door, so if anyone was still in my apartment, it would be harder for them to escape from me. I placed the grocery bags next to the door and took out a kunai from my weapons pouch, assuming that the person was still lurking around in my apartment. I slowly walked through the apartment, trying not to make a single sound.
I cautiously checked every room and found no one. I believed that whoever was in my apartment was looking for something special because nothing was taken. I walked back into my room and began picking up the clothes that were thrown everywhere. I picked up a black shirt from the ground when I spotted my mother's necklace glistening from beneath the bed. I gasped and picked it up quickly. My mother's necklace was a black ruby hanging from a silver chain, and it was the only thing that belonged to her that I owned. I examined the necklace closely to make sure that it hadn’t been damaged when it had been carelessly thrown to the ground. Thankfully, it wasn’t damaged, but I couldn’t help the inner turmoil that began burning deep down within me. ‘Someone is trying to test the waters by angering me.’ Afraid and fearful that someone might try to steal my mother's necklace, I quickly fastened it around my neck. It was only then that I began to clean the apartment up, putting all the clothes where they belong.
After I placed everything back where it belonged, I went back to my bedroom and laid down on my bed. I spaced out for a matter of time because I was trying to think of what these intruders could possibly have been looking for in my apartment. When I finally came back to my senses, I looked over at the window to see that the sun was beginning to set beyond the horizon. I didn't realize it, but a few tears were streaming down my face. Involuntarily, my hands went up to my face as I quickly wiped the tears away with the back of my hand. The ringing of the doorbell got me out of my thoughts, and I immediately stood up and went to the front door without hesitation. I opened the door and a smile appeared over my lips since it was Sasuke who stood at my doorway. Curiosity filled his eyes when he saw that mine were red. "Is something wrong? You were crying." Sasuke asked, his dark eyes looking straight into mine as if mentally trying to read my thoughts.
"No, nothing's wrong," I replied, wanting to get the subject off of me, "why did you come here anyway?" I was reluctant to tell Sasuke about my incident because the last thing I wanted was to stir up an investigation that would draw even more attention to me. Someone in Konohagakure, besides Kakashi and Lady Tsunade, knew my true identity because this breaking and entering was no coincidence. I had become someone’s target, and the thought of that filled my stomach with dread as my heart slowly sank. ‘My life was never going to be easy.’
"Kakashi Sensei told me that he wanted to speak to you at the training grounds," Sasuke responded, his eyes still studying me with concern filling them. I made no move to tell the Uchiha what was wrong; I barely knew the boy and I wasn’t going to open up to a complete stranger. The only person one could truly trust nowadays was themselves, and as royalty, I learned that the hard way through dealing with deception of all sorts.
"Okay, let's go then," I answered, pushing my troublesome thoughts aside as I closed the door behind me and made sure that it was locked, "he couldn't have talked to me earlier in the day? I can’t believe after all these years, he’s still as compulsive as ever."
"Knowing Kakashi Sensei, he always leaves what he has to do for the last minute," Sasuke said with a smirk lurking over his thin lips. Sasuke and I walked to the training grounds in silence; I kept my gaze on the ground before me, my hands deep in my pockets as I tried my best to ignore the dreadful thoughts that constantly filled my thoughts. When we both arrived at the training grounds, nobody was there. I already knew that Kakashi was going to be late like he usually was, so I sat down by a tree, waiting patiently for Kakashi to show up. Sasuke sat down next to me and couple of minutes passed by in silence. I couldn't take the silence anymore, so I decided to break it before I went insane. "So, tell me about yourself," I asked, finding a sudden interest in the Uchiha.
"What do you want to know?" Sasuke said, not sure where he should start as he took a seat beneath the shade of a great oak.
"I don't know," I responded as I turned away from him, my gaze searching through the darkness to make sure that we truly were alone. I had the strange feeling that we were being watched from afar, and I refused to settle my guard as I gazed at the Uchiha from the corner of my eye, "why don't you tell me about your family?"
I watched Sasuke's body stiffen at my question, a dark, brooding look entering his gaze. This was the first time I’d ever seen a reaction such as this from the Uchiha, and I quickly realized that I probably said the wrong thing and I began to regret asking him anything in the first place. "You don't have to...," I started, but never finished my statement.
"I came from the Uchiha Clan," Sasuke said, looking forward and directly into my gaze, "my whole clan is dead. My older brother, Itachi, killed them all. He is also dead to me. I’m an avenger and one day, I’ll fulfill my fate in destroying my brother’s existence. It’s exactly what he deserves for tainting the Uchiha name."
"I'm sorry for asking," I whispered sincerely, understanding where the boy’s hatred was coming from, "the only family that I have left is my father, but he's very ill right now and I honestly don’t know how much time I have left with him. My mother died giving birth to me and my brother was killed is a ninja ambush. I'm just my father's puppet. My feelings were never a priority to him, and he only sought out things that would help him in the long run.” Sasuke just looked over at me and stared into my eyes, trying to take in what I had just said as I slowly sank to sit right beside him. "So, if you ask me, we're kind of similar in a way," I said, looking into his eyes in return, "we both don't have any true family left."
Sasuke didn't reply, but he just leaned a bit forward towards my face. I knew exactly what Sasuke wanted to do, and my body froze at that moment as his lips softly touched my cheek. His breath my warm against my skin, and I just stared at him through wide, red hues, not understanding why he kissed me. His hand grazed down the length of my cheek before settling down on my shoulder. "Am I interrupting something here?" a voice asked from a few feet away.
I quickly pulled away from Sasuke at the sound of the voice; I hadn’t even sensed anyone around so I was shocked to see that someone had been able to sneak up on us without me being aware of it. I didn't know about Sasuke, but my face was completely red from embarrassment. I looked up to see that Kakashi was only a few feet away from us at that point, and I could even tell that he had a smile lurking over his lips underneath that mask of his. "Kakashi," I said in a sweet voice before exploding, "you're late! Why do you always do this? Can’t you learn punctuality for once?!"
I quickly picked up the closest thing that was in my reach, and it just happened to be a rock as I threw it at the silver-haired Jounin. He wasn't expecting me to do that and the rock hit him square in the face. Kakashi rubbed his cheek as his skin began swelling from the rock’s impact. A smirk pulled at the corners of my lips as I crossed my arms over my chest, a triumphant expression appearing over my features. "Ouch!" Kakashi exclaimed, out of breathe as he continued to rub the feeling back into his cheek, "that really hurt, Serenity!"
