Chapter Twenty-Eight
Dreams are the best source of knowledge.
Beauty was seen through the eyes of the predator; snow trickled down from the sky as he stood on the top of a cliff, looking down over the kingdom. His blood red eyes showed regret as he continued to look onward at the procession. Dread, sorrow, sadness, and depression…these were all the emotions weighing down on me before I opened my eyes. The moment I opened my eyes, a bright light flashed before me and the air I was breathing was quickly caught in my lungs. The large gasp of breath that I took felt like the first breath I took when I came into this world. I shielded my eyes with the back of my hand, not understanding why my surroundings were so bright. However, it didn’t take me long to know that I was dreaming about the future—I needed to pay attention since whatever I was about to see was actually going to happen. Quickly recognizing that I was in the courtyard of my kingdom, I took a long look around me to see that I was surrounded by people that couldn’t even notice my presence since I was invisible to them. The first thing that I noticed about these people was that they were all wearing black clothing; this had to be a funeral then. I tore my gaze away from the female standing next to me as I gawked at the condition of the palace itself. I didn’t know what had happened, but everything seemed to be basically in ruins. A large crater had demolished most of the south wing of the palace; something had attacked my people and I was furious that this would happen. I wouldn’t let it happen because I was going to do everything in my power to prevent all of these deaths. I would put my life on the line before any other soul could get hurt.
It was true of course, I would rather die than see any of my people suffer. My sad gaze continued to wander over all the destruction; I was still unable to understand how I could have let this happen. Did I do nothing to stop it? Was I absent during all of this? Was this a sneak attack on the entire village? The crowd of people around me began to move out of the courtyard as their feet began to carry their wary bodies towards the back of the palace where the gardens were located. I reluctantly began to follow the crowd, keeping close to the very back because I was trying to take in all the damage that had occurred. Huge parts of the forest had been burned down to a crisp and the grand wall that was suppose to protect the kingdom was no longer standing. What force could have done this? I gave up on trying to figure out who the culprit was and focused all of my attention towards this funeral. I still had no idea who the deceased was, but when I stretched my neck to get a better glimpse since I was all the way in the back, I was able to see that the casket was being carried all the way towards the front. As a group, we all continued to walk past the gardens and I remembered all the times I use to play with my older brother here. Just being in the gardens brought back sad memories since Miko died several years ago. I had no idea that the crowd of people had stopped moving and I even walked right through the person who was standing in front of me. Walking through that person felt as if someone decided to dump a bucket of ice water right over my head; the chill that went through me made me tremble to the bone.
I was chilled completely to the bone, but I continued to walk through the people ahead of me because I needed to get to the center of the crowd. By the time I reached the center of the crowd, I realized that the procession had stopped in the section of the cemetery that was dedicated to my family. Panic sparked a fearsome fire within me; my core was full of fright because the casket was being lowered into the space beside my mother’s grave. Beside the priest stood someone who looked extremely familiar, I caught myself staring into the eyes of an older version of myself. The bags under her eyes and the scratches located all over her bare skin told me that she had a rough time during this attack. The attacker was someone definitely stronger than myself… I still couldn’t believe that this attack had left me in such bad shape. I watched the tears spill over the cheeks of the older version of me; she was really trying to hold herself together in front of everyone, but was unable to. Next to her stood my nursemaid; Raile was silently crying and avoiding eye contact with everyone. The priest began to speak while the undertakers began to fill the grave with fresh dirt; by the expressions coming across his face, his words must have been emotional and full of sincere meaning. It was a shame that I couldn’t hear a single thing that he said, it was almost as if someone had muted him. I just couldn’t take my gaze off the undertakers; they were filling the grave and I was unable to see who the deceased was in time. The priest had finished and blessed the grave with a simple cross over it before departing; it wasn’t long until the crowd began to disperse as well.
