Chapter Thirty-Three

Itachi held Serenity against his body, already beginning to regret what he had done.  He had no choice; placing Serenity into a state of deep slumber would have made the journey back to the Snow Kingdom much easier on the two. Itachi felt Serenity’s chakra gradually returning to its original peak, but the journey would have worn her out and all he wanted was to make things less challenging for the girl who had stolen his heart. His gaze lingered over the peaceful expression on Serenity’s face, already beginning to miss the cheerfulness that brightened her face. Itachi was careful not to hurt his precious cargo as he picked Serenity into his arms, her light body limp in his arms. His gaze narrowed as he quickly scanned the terrain with his Sharingan gaze. His gaze then lifted towards the sky, spotting the location of the sun. Within the blink of an eye, Itachi was gone from the clearing, sprinting deeper into the depths of the forest, holding Serenity close to his heart. The clearing remained silent and undisturbed, giving the impression that no one was near. A lone figure walked out from the shadows, his silver hair shining from the sunlight. He stared off in the direction that Itachi had taken off in, a smirk playing across his lips. The man pushed his glasses back onto the bridge of his nose, a glare flashing through the lens. With a smirk still dancing across his lips, the man retreated back into the shadows from where he came from.

Not a sound could be heard throughout the dense forest; darkness shrouded the terrain as silence weighed down on the environment. It was the dead of night and not a soul lurked about; forest animals had already settled for the night within their shelters. Hours had passed since Serenity’s departure from the Akatsuki headquarters and the illuminating sun had already said its final goodbyes to the world as it sunk beneath the horizon. The silence that bore over the forest was overbearing and unbroken until a snap of a twig resonated through the darkness, echoing through the forest and sounding much louder than normal. The origin of the sound could not be pinpointed, but the mystery was quickly solved as a blurry figure sprinted by, the distortion of his appearance due to the intense speed that he was travelling at. The cloaked figure was a black haze against his surroundings, the flapping of his cloak consisted with the slight breeze that filled the night. His bright red eyes pierced through the darkness, the infamous Sharingan being his most important asset as a rogue shinobi. He held the young girl close to his chest, shielding her face from the rampaging winds and tightening his grip around her small frame. A small sigh slipped through her lips, his concerned gaze lowering to watch the peaceful expression that dominated her sleeping features.

Itachi Uchiha’s gaze lingered over Serenity’s unconscious form for a moment longer before lifting his stare before him. The thought of what her dreams consisted of crossed the man’s mind several times; also he was quite aware that Serenity had suffered from unremarkable dreams and visions during her stay with the Akatsuki. What those dreams consisted of were unknown to him, but he didn’t want to trouble the young girl by bringing them up. Those dreams obviously haunted Serenity; that much he was sure of.  The Uchiha continued to sprint at an amazing speed, clutching Serenity’s body close to his chest as he weaved in and out of the maze of trees that scattered the vast forest. He never once stopped for a break even though a pain settled deep within him; Itachi Uchiha had been sick for several years now, and it took everything that he had to keep it from showing. Out of the corner of his eye, the Uchiha noticed that the sun had completely set, giving him the advantage that he needed in order to sneak Serenity back into the Snow Kingdom. The darkness would allow Itachi to blend in with the shadows that shrouded over the land, giving him the opportunity to enter Snow Country territory undetected. His gaze landed on the girl once more, wishing that things didn’t have to end this way. There was still so much he wished to rely with her.
