The Master's Problems

Chapter 2 - Each Other's Struggle

It was the next day and Sonic was finally coming to attend his first day in college. Servants weren't allowed to stay in the class so it made Sonic a bit nervous about not having anyone to talk to, but then he also remembered that he met Mephiles the previous day and he was busy trying to look for him. His face brighten up when he saw his new friend already on his seat, coincidentally the seat next to him was empty.

"Mephiles!" Sonic called and approached him.

The pale hedgehog looked at him and smiled, "I'm glad we're in the same class" he said and offered the seat next to him, "I was so surprised when I find out there are actually a total of three classes"

"Yeah me too" Sonic nervously chuckled, "I'd be very sad if we were to separate" he said and Mephiles nodded in agreement.

Meanwhile, there were a bunch of gazebos and benches around the campus where most servants could be seen sitting and waiting for their masters to finish their class.

Shadow sat on a bench, he had his phone with him to pass the time. He noticed that someone was sitting next to him and he can't help to see who it was. It's Mephiles' maid, Silver.

"Uh...good morning" Shadow greeted.

Silver stared back to him and nodded his head, "good morning"

It was awkward. Bodyguards mostly don't talk to maids and so was with maids to bodyguards. They were only trying to get close because their masters were friends.

"How many years have you served your master?" Silver asked.

"For twelve years, how about you?"

"Eleven" he smiled, "guess you're more experienced than me"

"We're just one year apart, don't think about it too much" Shadow chuckled.

The two then started to get to know each other, but they mostly talk about work stuff. Since all they've done in their lifes was to serve their master, they don't have much to talk about.

Meanwhile, Sonic and Mephiles were still waiting for their lecturer to come. They had been talking about their family and how surprisingly similar and close their business actually were. They probably met at some point before in a formal party but never really noticed each other.

"Okay I know we only just met like, for a day, but I wanna tell you one of my huge problems being part in my family" Sonic started whispering.

"Don't worry, I'm not one to judge, so tell me" Mephiles said, leaning close so he could hear him.

"So...my parents told me that I should immediately get married once I graduate from here" the blue hedgehog sighed, "and I'm so scared if they will force me to marry someone I don't love for the sake of the business"

"I understand how you feel" Mephiles nodded, "sometimes my parents would talk about that to me. But, do you actually want to get married someday?"

Sonic hesitated for a moment but then he nodded.

"Well, I guess you still want to get married just with the right mobian. I on the other hand am against marrying anyone" Mephiles groaned and leaned on his desk.

"But why?" The other asked.

"I don't know...I guess the thought of having to take care the business and my significant other all at the same time is going to be so annoying" he complained, "especially if they're the type of mobian that wants money, not affection. They could be even worse if they can't even take care of themself!" he sighed and rested his chin on his palm upsettingly.

"That makes sense, I understand" Sonic chuckled and tapped his shoulder, "I hope you will have your freedom in running your business"

Mephiles stared at him and smiled, "thank you, and I hope you can avoid being forced to marry a stranger" he said and Sonic nodded.

Right after they stopped talking, the lecturer arrived. The class spent the first thirty minutes of introducing each other to the lecturer and the rest of the class, after that they first started learning about the very simple basics of their subjects for about two hours before class finally ended.

Mephiles and Sonic exit the class to search for their servants. They spotted them standing just not far from where they were.

"Aww did you two wait for us together?" Sonic smiled, approaching his bodyguard who nodded at him.

"You have no more classes after this", Silver said while checking his tablet "let's go home"

"Wait! Why don't we have lunch together?" Sonic called out to stop the other two from leaving.

"I'm okay with that" Mephiles smiled before he turned his gaze over to his maid, "I don't have anything planned this noon, right?"

Silver checked the device in his hand before staring back at him, "no"

"Great! Let's meet up at the restaurant" Sonic said before they head to their own cars.

The college only have one restaurant, but it was a very large establishment with three floors. Sonic and Mephiles arrived at the place, they waited for both Shadow and Silver to park the car before getting out.

One other thing about the restaurant was that there weren't any servants, they only have receptionists and chefs. The students rely on their own servant to take their order to the cashier.

As Sonic and Mephiles were waiting for Shadow and Silver to return with their oders, they started chatting again.

"I'm being very honest here, Mephiles, I want to run away with Shadow if I'm forced to marry a stranger"

Mephiles looked at him surprisingly, "your bodyguard? Do you like him?"

"Yes" Sonic mumbled shyly while averting his eyes away, "that's why I can never fall in love with anyone else...Shadow is already perfect for me"

"That's actually the first time I heard someone liking their own servant, but again I won't judge your feelings" Mephiles stated.

"What, you're not in love with a maid THAT cute?" Sonic questioned while pointing his finger to where the albino maid was.

"I like him but I don't love him, I just appreciate all the hardwork he's done for me and for being able to put up with me who constantly forgets about important meetings" he chuckled.

Sonic leaned forward to the table and hummed, "you two sounds like a married couple" he teased.

"We are not" Mephiles stated.

The two stopped talking when their servants came back with their orders. They of course told Shadow and Silver to order something for themselves. While at it, Sonic and Mephiles decided to change the topic and avoid talking about their personal problems, at least not when their servants were around.
