Flashback - Elena

It's been almost two weeks since we joined the scouts. Unfortunately, Severin and I were put in the group of cadets that Captain Levi oversees, making it extremely difficult to avoid him. Although Severin doesn't know exactly what is going on, he knows how angry the Captain makes me, so he has been helping keep me distracted so that I don't snap at him now that he's our direct commanding officer.

"Alright brats, it's time for hand-to-hand combat. Partner up and get started, you should already know what to do unless you are idiots," Levi's harsh voice rang through the quad.

I kept my face neutral but took in a big breath from my nose in response to his harshness.

"Hey," Severin spoke from beside me, taking a hold of my arm. "Relax, we're only just starting. At least wait a little before getting angry, yeah?" He chuckled as I allowed him to guide me by my arm to our spot to begin training.

I sighed and forced myself to shake it off, focusing on him in front of me and getting into my fighting position. "Sorry. I swear, every word that comes out of that man's mouth just... irks me," I shook my head, trying to get his voice out of my mind.

"Well, I guess I'll just have to give you something else to think about huh?" Severin laughed, and then quickly lunged at me before I had a chance to respond.

I dodged him and laughed as well, watching him stumble in surprise. "I bet you thought you were fast enough that time didn't you?" I teased, sticking out my foot under him to further knock him off balance.

Severin grunted as he collided with the ground, "Okay, now that was unfair." He scowled at me, but his voice was playful.

I circled around him as he stood, eyeing him challengingly. Severin and I had always sparred together. He was the only one who was close enough to my level to actually put up a fight, but he still always lost. "Come on, I know you can do better than that Sev," I smirked at him as he lowered back down into his fighting stance.

"Oh I'm just getting started," he said with a laugh, closing the distance between us and throwing punches one after the other.

I smiled, dodging and blocking his punches while also throwing some of my own. I landed a punch to his side, effectively halting his attacks. I used his pause to do a spin kick to his stomach, sending him flying back down to the ground. I ran a hand through my hair to get it out of my way and steadied my breathing.

"Ouch, that did not feel good," Severin groaned from the ground, sitting up. He looked at me and let out a breathy laugh.

"What?" I asked defensively, reaching a hand down to help him up. I had to lean back with all of my strength in order to pull him upright, almost falling to the ground myself.

He shook his head as if to say 'nothing', and then stared at me with a challenging smile on his face.

I raised an eyebrow at him, he knew brushing me off like that was something that I hated, and yet he does it anyways sometimes, just to piss me off. This time, I attacked first, throwing a series of unrelenting punches and kicks at him. He blocked or dodged most, but I still landed a few. He held his ground, waiting for the onslaught to calm.

With one final kick that he blocked, I paused, taking a moment to catch my breath and assess the situation. Severin laughed through heavy breaths, wiping his forehead with the back of his hand.

"Ooo struck a nerve there, did I?" he taunted, a smile playing on his lips.

I rolled my eyes at him and scoffed, "For a split second you reminded me of someone that I really don't like." Pressing my lips together, I couldn't help the smirk that pulled at the corners of my mouth.
