Present - Narrator
Captain Levi walked as fast as his injured leg would let him when he heard that the main force of the scouts was back. They had heard word that there was no breach in the wall, and that everything had calmed down for the most part. After putting the priest back in his cell, Levi had gone to Erwin's office to see what he was planning, and then headed back to his own office to wait.
The wait had been excruciating, and although he tried to calm himself down with tea and paperwork, it didn't seem to help much. Three pots of tea later and none of his paperwork finished, he heard the shouts of people saying that they were back.
As Levi pushed through the outer doors to the quad by the stables, he braced himself for what might be returning. When the group immerged from the distance, he was shocked at how intact everyone seemed. He hated that the sight was as surprising as it was, but that was the way things were in the scouts.
"Hange," he called to her as she came into view.
"Ah, Levi!" she called back, waving excitedly. "How's my priest friend doing?"
Levi rolled his eyes at her enthusiasm, but it did give him the slightest bit of relief for how it went. He scoffed, "Still a silent pain in the ass."
Hange let out a deflated noise, her face falling considerably. "Well, we'll figure something out, right?" she laughed, giving Levi a grin as she rode past him towards the stables.
Another eye roll came from the Captain as he stepped backwards to observe the line of scouts coming in, and to watch for the face he had been worried about.
Panic had set in as the line faded out, leaving Levi with a heavy pit in his stomach. His heart felt like it was going to shatter into a million pieces, as footsteps approached him from the side.
"Hey," Hange said, putting a hand on Levi's shoulder. "By the way, Elena had to go back and rendezvous with the rest of her squad at the Eastern defensive line, so her and her squad won't be back until later. She has Eren with her, to keep him away from some suspicious cadets that we need to talk to Erwin about."
Levi didn't know whether to feel relieved, annoyed, or worried at this news. It was almost like he was feeling all of them at once, plus more. He clenched his jaw, all of a sudden not feeling like talking to anyone.
"Let me know when they get back," he grumbled, turning and walking away, back towards his office.
"Hey! Levi!" Hange called after him, but he ignored her.
He had no idea how far away the Eastern defensive line was, or how long it was going to take them to get back. He hoped that no one would intercept them after hearing that Eren was with them, but he knew that Elena was extremely capable of handling herself in the field. He would almost say that she was as capable as him, but it had been a while since he had seen her in action. There was also the fact that she was still injured, no matter how hard she tried to ignore it.
As he walked back into his office and sank down into his chair, he knew that Hange would be by to see him soon. She had a way of telling when something was bothering him, just like Elena. Elena had always been good at that though, Hange had only just recently figured it out. Maybe it was because of how long he had known Elena for, but she always seemed to be able to see right through his façade.
A sigh escaped from the Captain's mouth as he stared up at the ceiling. No one but them actually knew the truth about their past together, and how long they had known each other for. It was actually a lot longer than everyone thinks, but that's not his fault. Elena was the one who decided to keep quiet and not tell anyone about it. He was only respecting her wishes. Levi understood why she wanted to keep it a secret, so it didn't bother him much. That is, once she had explained it to him.
Her reasons were different than what he had originally thought. Levi had thought at first that it was because of him that she wanted to keep it a secret. But the truth was she thought people would look down on her if they knew where she was from and how she grew up. There had been people who had asked her, questioned what happened to her during the 10 years that she had gone missing when her uncle who had raised her, Josua Hartmann, died on a mission in the old Reconnaissance Battalion. But Elena had always kept her mouth shut, and eventually, people just accepted the mystery.
But now, they were both hiding something. Levi sometimes felt tired of having to pretend that they weren't intimate, but it was not an option. Commander Erwin had barred open relationships between the scouts a long time ago, before Levi had even joined. Though he wasn't sure he would call what he and Elena had a 'relationship' per-say, since they had never made anything official, they still had to keep it a secret.
Elena's flushed, lust-filled face flashed in the Captains mind, making him blush and hide his face in his hands. It had been many years since they started having sex, but she still drove him crazy. Levi sighed, leaning forward on his desk and staring down at the wood. He tried to stop it, but the images of their first time still overwhelmed his thoughts, taking over his mind and making his body tingle.
It had been easier for him to resist his urges while she was under his command, because he knew that it would be highly inappropriate to engage with her in that circumstance. Even so, there had still been a few times where he had not been able to stop himself and they had kissed. He had known that he was struggling to keep himself under control around her, and had tried to keep his distance once she was promoted to a Captain. But then, Commander Erwin had sent for them to join him at one of his conferences, and that was something Levi could not avoid. One of the nights of that conference was when they had their first time. When Elena had told him that she wanted him, and hearing her say that was too much for him, causing him to finally give in to his pent up attraction and lust towards the fiery redhead.
Thinking back on it, he realized that it had been over five years since then. Elena had been promoted to a Captain and had only had her own squad for a couple of weeks when wall Maria fell.
Captain Levi had been so consumed in his thoughts and so tired from the events of the last couple of days, that he had fallen asleep sitting at his desk. This was not an uncommon occurrence, and he often slept at his desk if he was not with Elena.
A harsh, hurried pounding at his door jolted him awake, making his heart rate increase only just. He swallowed and took a breath to calm his heart, and then called out.
"Name and business," he grunted, still feeling groggy from his sleep. He had no idea when he fell asleep, or how long he had been asleep for.
Instantly, a voice sounded from the other side. "It's Hange," she responded, not bothering to say why she was pounding on his door.
He rolled his eyes, "Come in."
The door creaked open as the Captain lifted himself off from his desk and straightened his shirt.
Hange sauntered in, flopping down into the chair across from him. "I thought we were going to meet with Erwin to talk about what happened and those cadets I mentioned?" she asked, eyeing him curiously.
Captain Levi swallowed, trying to push away any signs of sleep. "I was under the impression that we were waiting for Elena to get back first," he responded flatly, straightening the paperwork on his desk to avoid making eye contact with his comrade.
She chuckled lightly, "I mean, I guess it's not a bad idea. Sure Levi, we can wait for her to get back."
Finally, Levi met her gaze, noticing an odd look on her face. Hange knew that he would have trouble focusing if Elena wasn't back, so she didn't argue with him. She raised an eyebrow at the Captain, a smirk drawing out her lips. He rolled his eyes at her in response, a harsh unamused look settling on his face.
Hange had made countless efforts to get the two together. What she didn't know, was that her efforts had not been entirely useless, they did play a factor in the beginning of their... 'relationship'.
"Alright," Hange sighed, standing up. "She should be back in the next hour or so. Once she's ready, come find me," she walked over to the door, opening it, but stopped, turning back to the Captain. "Don't forget to tell her how worried you were when she gets back," Hange winked at him, giving him a sly look.
Levi rolled his eyes at her again, giving her a grunt of disapproval as she turned and walked out.
