Dream was starting to lose hope. He'd been flying for hours, and had seen no trace of Sapnap.

Dream's best friend, his brother, had gone missing four days ago, and Dream had been part of the search party every day, flying until he was on the brink of passing out. The rest of the party had already returned to the village for the day, but Dream wasn't ready to give up.

It was already getting dark when Dream finally spotted something. A ring in the grass, seemingly burned by fire, and in the middle, a small form.

Dream dove through the air, landing with a soft thud. He immediately realized something was very very wrong. Dark spots decorated Sapnap's shirt, his shoulder laid in an unnatural angle.

But all that could be healed. Something much more sinister had taken place. Sapnap's back was bare. The shimmering delicate wings had been ripped off at the base.

Dream let out a scream. A scream of anger, sadness, guilt, horror. A scream to describe what he couldn't put into words.

What happened? Who could've done this?

Dream ran up to Sapnap's curled-up form.
"Sapnap! Wake up!"

Sapnap groaned. He slowly came to.

"Sap" Dream breathed out.

Sapnap lazily opened his eyes, grimacing in pain. Despite that, he sighed in relief.
"You...you f-found me"
There was even a hint of a smile although it was strained and it was clear he was in agony.

Dream knelt beside Sapnap, his fingers tracing the air where he knew those firey wings should've been. It didn't feel real.

"Who did this to you?" Dream whispered, "What happened to your wings?"

Sapnap gasped, a shock of pain welling through him.
"I- I don't know", he wheezed, "they were masked" a cough followed, accompanied by blood.

Dream gently placed a hand on Sapnap's shoulder. If there was ever a time for his healing spells to work it was now. A golden glow started emitting from his palm, faint, but that was expected. Dream was still a beginner at healing magic. The glow travelled down Sapnap's back, centralizing around what was left of his wings. Dream prayed the magic was at least taking away some of the pain.

Sapnap continued.
"They were...tall, like elves, I think they had horns, but I. I- i don't know anything else" he was desperately trying to provide any helpful information.

Sapnap's pain caused Dream great sorrow, and rage. He would find them, and he would make them pay.

Dream carefully picked up Sapnap, trying to be as gentle as possible, but Sapnap still squirmed and cried out in pain as his injuries were agitated.

"I know, I'm sorry, but we have to get you home"
Dream hated seeing Sapnap like this.

Dream lifted off, keeping steady, and began flying back to the village.

Sapnap occasionally cried out in pain, but after a while, he quieted down, falling into a restless slumber, much to Dream's relief and dismay. He was glad Sapnap was not awake to feel the pain, but what if those eyes never opened again?

Dream could see the lanterns by the gate. They were almost home. Sapnap stirred, tiredly blinking, grimacing as he once again became aware of the pain.

The village was quiet when Dream passed through the gate, the guards sharing concerned glances, but choosing to say nothing.

Dream carried Sapnap to their house. It was dark. The interior was lit only by a dim lantern. Sapnap has once again fallen asleep.

Dream made his way to Sapnap's bedroom, gently laying him down onto the soft bed. He lightly brushed his fingers against Sapnap's cheek, wiping away some blood.

Sapnap's eyes fluttered open, and a whine escaped his lips, followed by a grunt through gritted teeth.

Dream attempted to soothe the other.
"It's going to be alright, I promise"

Dream stood.
"I'll go get the med kit, okay? I'll be right back, don't worry"

He quickly exited the room, lighting the lantern in Sapnap's room on the way out, and made his way to the living room. He searched through cabinets until he found what he was looking for, a med kit. They hadn't needed it in a while. He returned to Sapnap.

"Hey, I'm back"

Sapnap was drifting in and out if consciousness, barely registering Dream's return.

"Can you open you eyes, please?" Dream asked. Sapnap had to be awake. Dream wouldn't be able to tend to all the wounds unless Sapnap helped.

Sapnap slowly blinked, his eyes thankfully staying open. It seemed he still had some energy left.

"Okay, Sap, this is gonna hurt, but I need you to sit up for me"
Dream knew it was a lot to ask, but it was necessary if Dream was going to be able to properly tend to Sapnap's wounds.

Sapnap sighed, but offered a small nod. He moved his arms to attempt to hoist himself into a sitting position, Dream's hands moving to his shoulders, supporting him. Sapnap cried out in pain as his body shifted, but bit down and endured it.

Nevertheless, Dream tried his best to offer some comforting words.
"Shh, hold on, you're going to be alright"

Dream continued to lift Sapnap, until he was finally somewhat sitting. Dream let Sapnap's head rest on his shoulder.

"Dream, it hurts" he whispered.

Dream wants to cry, he really wants to, but he knows that would only hurt Sapnap even more.
"I'm right here. Stay with me"

Dream reached for a bottle, and poured some of the contents onto a piece of cloth. He had a slight difficulty seeing what he was doing, as Sapnap was heavily leaning on him, but he still managed to clean around the destroyed wings, wiping away blood and dirt. Sapnap hissed as the rubbing alcohol seeped into the open wounds but let Dream continue. Once satisfied, Dream carefully wrapped bandages around Sapnap's torso, trying to not touch the wings.

"Thank you."
Sapnap closed his eyes and relaxed his head, fully leaning it against Dream.

Dream gently stroked his hair, detangling some me strands between his fingers.

A sob tears through Sapnap's body as he whispers a terrifying realization.
"I'll never fly again"

The grief and remorse crashed down on dream. He'd refused to consider that, it had seemed too impossible, too unfair.

"It's okay, I'm here, I'll make you're you'll be okay, I'll take care of you"
Dream didn't quite know what else to say.

Sapnap was shaking his head slowly, staring off into the distance.

Dream clenched his jaw and pushed down the anger, the pure hate, for whoever had hurt his little brother. Anger was not what Sapnap needed right then. He had enough to handle with his own emotions, Dream's could wait.

This was how they spent the rest of the night, brothers, embraced, mourning together the loss of Sapnap's wings, of his flight, crying together over the heinous crime that had been committed.
