Sonic laid on the roof of the Thorndyke mansion, just like he did almost every night. It had become his safe haven. The only place in the city where there was no one who needed something from him or insisted to hang out.

A cool breeze blew past and Sonic shivered.

The weather had steadily become colder during their time on earth, and it was soon nearing the end of October.

Chris had joked that they'd soon need to buy Sonic and his friends some winter clothes. Even the idea of a large, heavy winter coat made Sonic cringe. How would he move properly in such a monstrous garment?

Sonic had debated staying inside all winter, but he quickly realized that 1: Dr. Eggman probably wouldn't take a break in his attacks just because of some cold weather, and 2: Realistically, Sonic knew he could never stay inside for more than a few hours, and a whole winter was just preposterous.

With a sigh, Sonic decided that the coming winter was a problem for later. Besides, for all he knew, they could already be back home by then.

Sonic crossed his arms behind his head. He gazed up at the vast sky above. Millions and millions of stars gazed right back.

'A lot of them are dead by know' he thought.

He wondered if there was any way at all to really tell which stars were dead and which ones were alive. Tails could probably figure something out if he really wanted to.

Sonic remembered reading somewhere that you sometimes could see planets too. They just looked like brighter and more colourful stars.

Sonic moved his gaze to a specific red and blue flickering spot. It was supposedly Mars. Sonic wondered if his home was one of those dots.

Sonic sighed. He really missed home. He missed the endless grassy fields, he missed the beautiful forests, he missed the people, he missed the wonderful meadows filled with flowers, filling the air with hundreds of different scents. But most of all, he missed his sky.

Sure, he had a sky here, but it wasn't the same. Everything was different. Where he expected to find a certain constellation, he instead found a lone faint star, flickering weakly, apart from the rest it seemed.

Never in his life had Sonic thought that some dots in the sky meant so much to him.

Suddenly he felt something warm trickle down his cheek. Sonic was crying.

He tried to stop the tears, but it seemed they didn't want to stop. They continued to fall, even as Sonic wiped them away.

Sonic eventually gave up and let the tears fall. He was thankful it was silent crying, or else he might wake up his friends.

It was the first time in years that Sonic allowed himself to cry, to be weak. He didn't know how to feel. He was ashamed that he even needed to cry and angry that he couldn't stop. Yet, at the same time, it was a relief. It felt like waves of worry left his body along with the tears.

He still didn't like it. It made him feel vulnerable.

'That's enough!' he thought, drying his eyes and sitting up.

He clenched his jaw, pushing away the bad emotions.

Certain that there was no trace of his moment of weakness, Sonic strode across the roof to the window and climbed inside. He navigated through a maze of random junk sprawled across the floor and eventually got to his "bed", which really was just a bean bag with a pillow and a blanket.

He crawled under his blanket and buried his face in the pillow. He stopped and listened for a moment, just to be sure he didn't wake anyone, but when everyone's breathing remained the same, Sonic allowed himself to close his eyes and drift away into what he hoped to be a nightmare-free sleep.
