"Tommy!"
The sound startled Tommy. He quickly brought his hands to his face, wiping away tears and snot. He didn't turn to face Dream. He knew Dream would immediately know he'd been crying, and then he'd start asking questions.
"Tommy?"
Dream's voice was lower this time, careful.
Tommy heard the shifting of armor, the ruffle of clothes. Cautious, he glanced up and saw Dream sit down, the signature mask laying in his lap.
Dream sighed.
"I think Wilbur's looking for you"
"So what? Did he ask you to drag me back to Pogtopia?" Tommy muttered, still refusing to look at Dream.
The other shifted, laying down in the grass.
"Nah. Just heard him complaining when I came by to drop off some supplies. Figured you'd be up here though"
When Tommy stayed silent Dream continued.
"Remember when I showed you this place back when you first came here to the smp? You didn't even want to leave. I had to bribe you with Bad's homemade cookies"
Tommy did remember. The view had been amazing, especially in the warm glow of the sunset. The community house had looked so small from up there, the feeling only being exaggerated by the emptiness around it. Of course, there had been some other buildings back then, but they had been few and modest, and there had been no L'Manburg. Though Tommy failed to see how Dream thought this was somehow relevant.
"If you're not here because of Wilbur then why are you?" Tommy finally turned to look at Dream.
Dream hesitated, picking at the grass, choosing his words carefully.
"Wanted to see how you were doing"
Tommy huffed, crossing his arms. "That just sounds like a lot of bullshit"
Dream let out a chuckle.
"Okay, maybe it was partly because Tubbo was getting worried, but", Dream pushed himself off the ground, turning to look at Tommy, "I do care, and you're obviously not feeling too poggers at the moment"
Tommy raised an eyebrow.
"Poggers? Really? Dream, if you're trying to comfort me you're doing a horrible job"
Dream raised his hands in defense.
"Hey! Okay, I'll admit, I'm not the best at this whole 'talking about feelings' thing, but 'horrible' is a bit harsh, don't you think?"
Tommy only emphasized his expression, but he cracked when Dream let out his signature wheeze. Tommy blamed it on Dream's laugh simply being too contagious, and definitely not Dream actually succeeding in cheering him up.
The mood had immediately brightened, and Tommy found himself not quite as miserable, at least for the moment.
"So", Dream composed himself, turning serious again, much to Tommy's dismay.
"Do you want to talk about why you were, you know.., or do you want to do something else? Cause I'm not leaving you here to just be sad again"
Tommy shrugged.
"I don't know. Like, what's there to talk about?"
Dream hadn't expected Tommy's answer. It was rare to get him to really open up and talk things through, at least without it ending in screaming and fighting from someone. Maybe today would be different.
"Well, for starters, what made you sad?"
Dream really hoped he was going about this the right way. He'd never been good at talking about feelings. Strategies and threats were where he felt most comfortable. Tommy's silence was starting to make Dream nervous when Tommy finally opened his mouth.
"Wilbur. He's acting weird again"
"How so?"
Dream already had an idea, as Wilbur had been more than happy to share his thoughts and plans about L'Manburg with Dream, asking him for supplies, but he'd, naively, hoped Wilbur had at least managed to compose himself in front of Tommy. They were practically brothers, for fuck's sake.
"He keeps muttering to himself when he thinks I can't hear. He's always angry about L'Manburg, and he doesn't even seem to think we can get it back, but that's the whole plan, right? To rise up against Schlatt and regain L'Manburg"
"That was the plan, yes" Dream hadn't meant to speak in past tense, it just slipped past. He hoped Tommy wouldn't notice, but no such luck.
Tommy squinted, looking Dream dead in the eye.
"Was? Dream, what aren't you telling me?"
"It's...complicated. I don't know for certain what Wilbur's planning. He asked me for some TNT but I don't think he even knows exactly what he's gonna do"
"And you gave it to him?"
Tommy exclaimed.
Dream winced.
"What else was I supposed to do? I need someone to overthrow Schlatt, and Wilbur's planning to do that, one way or the other"
Tommy stared in disbelief. How did Dream think that was the best option?
"So what if he snaps, decides to just blow everything up?"
Dream didn't tell Tommy how close to the truth he was.
"I-I don't know, Tommy"
He didn't. He truly didn't. If Wilbur went through with any of the plans he'd rambled about the server would change forever. For the better or for the worse would be a mystery only time could solve.
"Then what should we do?"
Tommy asking Dream for advice, huh? It had been a while since that happened. If only Dream had a proper answer.
"You could leave. Go somewhere safe with Tubbo" Dream suggested, almost pleading.
"It's my home! I can't leave" Tommy snapped. Dream had expected that answer.
Dream sighed.
"Then you'll have to fight"
Dream swore he saw they boy's hope dwindle from his eyes. But then it returned, accompanied by a smile.
"You'll be on our side though, right?"
Dream smiled and nodded.
"Of course! Schlatt won't stand a chance!"
